Retailers warned to be extra vigilant

SIMPLE STEPS TO THEFT PREVENTION

-

GARDAI IN Bray have issued advice to retailers to protect themselves against theft over Christmas and the New Year.

The good news is that theft from shops in Bray is down three per cent compared to the same period last year.

As part of a retail theft prevention strategy gardai are targeting prolific offenders who regularly engage in shop theft, according to Sergeant John Fitzpatrick of Bray Garda Station.

He advised that retailers can also put some simple strategies in place to prevent theft.

‘ Try and acknowledge every customer you meet,' he said. 'Let customers know you are aware of their presence.'

Retailers should also watch people wandering aimlessly through the shop, fingering objects and frequently glancing at employees and other customers.

Valuables should be kept away from store exits to prevent grab and run situations. ' There are a number of stores in Bray that have high value goods very close to the door, and these would be vulnerable to grab type shop lifting,' said Sgt. Fitzpatrick.

Cash points and display counters should be kept clear of items which obstruct staff view through the shop. Staff should be making eye contact with people throughout the shop were possible.

Offenders should be prosecuted for every theft no matter how minor, and there are certain tell- tale characteristics of shoplifters that retailers should watch for.

They include people who seem nervous, spending more time watching sales staff than looking at the items on sale.

The thief usually checks to see if anyone is watching before they commit their act of theft.

They may come in to the store with a large group of children. The children are either used to distract or often to engage in the stealing. Another tactic is causing a disturbance in the store.

Shoplifters often operate in teams. One will distract an employee while another steals.
