Greystones native Eanna launches new book in UK
GREYSTONES native Éanna Cullen's new novel ‘An Egg-Maniac's Guide - to suicide,' was launched recently in the UK.
The ex-pat and former pupil of St. Brendan's in Bray has plenty to say about his latest book, and how to explain suffering in the 21st century to the modern reader, without sounding like a preacher.
‘What I really wanted to do,' he said to his audience in London's Bush Theatre, ‘was to take two characters, both of whom are suffering, and hold them up to the reader. To compare how they react to the challenges set, and to prove that two very different people in different situations can suffer the same.'
He paced back and forth, sipping wine and employing a wide range of hand gestures as he addressed his audience.
The protagonists of the novel include Bobby, a tormented Londoner who tries to explain why he has chosen suicide as a means of escape from his suffering. Afua is a Ghanian girl who has fought her way to the Western World. Despite the many upsetting trials and humiliations she has had to face, she remains innocent and hopeful.
‘I just wanted everyone to understand what this book is about, without being too preachy,' said Éanna, who had actors perform the two characters to his live audience.
