Rollercoaster ride for reliable Flynn

- JOHN FLYNN

JOHN FLYNN may never come down from his current high. The Baltinglass man is still picking his jaw off the floor after being named county footballer of the year and then he keeps a clean sheet as the Garden County shock the mighty Dubs!

While most of Wicklow will have woken up on Monday morning still coming to terms with the fact that they'd toppled the 2011 AllIreland champions, Flynn was still struggling to grasp that he was the county footballer of the year!

'I actually couldn't believe it. Usually as a goalkeeper these kind of things pass you by but I was absolutely thrilled; I was over the moon. I didn't think I had a chance but a few people had said to me that I was their favourite and most consistent but I just took it in my stride. I certainly wasn't expecting anything like that.'

If anything was going to bring the goalkeeper back down to earth it could have been the not-so friendly chants he was forced to endure throughout Sunday's match, but even that draws laughter from the net-minder.

Looking ahead to another season under Harry Murphy though is no laughing matter, and Flynn thinks that the future is bright under the Rathnew man.

'Today (Sunday's victory over Dublin) is a great step- ping-stone for heading into Division 3.

‘Everyone's mentality is fantastic, all the boys have bought into Harry's way and each one of the lads would die for each other now.'

While hopefully such drastic measures will not be required, everybody would certainly enjoy it if Flynn and co. were able to bury a few ghosts and lead our footballers to glory.
