Stu­dents ar­range cel­e­bra­tion of 100 years of ed­u­ca­tion

THE GATH­ER­ING 2013 isn’t just con­fined to fam­ily re­unions and clan gath­er­ings – other ex­cit­ing events lined up in­clude school re­unions, ad­ven­ture sports ac­tiv­i­ties, his­tor­i­cal fes­ti­vals and in­ter­na­tional polo games.

Three PLC stu­dents have or­gan­ised an event cel­e­brat­ing 100 years of ed­u­ca­tion in Balt­in­glass. Scoil Chonglais will host the re­u­nion as the school will wel­come all who at­tended the Old Con­vent, the old Tech­ni­cal School and Scoil Chonglais it­self. The event is open to ev­ery­one aged over 18 years of age, with the re­u­nion tak­ing place on March 9.

On April 5, the Do­mini­can Col­lege in Wicklow town has an evening of school tours or­gan­ised. Par­tic­i­pants will then be led into Fa­tima Hall for a meet and greet with staff, past and present. The party starts af­ter­wards with photo dis­plays and mu­sic from lo­cal bands.

Tul­far­ris House Ho­tel, Bless­ing­ton has ar­ranged a one-day ad­ven­ture race for May 25. The race is made up of three el­e­ments – kayak­ing, bik­ing, off road run­ning – and there are three dis­tances to com­pete in. This year also features for the first time in Ire­land a ju­nior moxie open to those aged be­tween 15 and 18. Par­tic­i­pants are en­cour­aged to race in a team of four, as well as in­di­vid­u­ally, un­der your fam­ily, club, school or county name.

Over two days in July Wicklow Sail­ing Club will host sailors from the UK and fur­ther afield, both as in­di­vid­ual vis­it­ing boats and those par­tic­i­pat­ing in the Ir­ish Sail­ing As­so­ci­a­tion Gath­er­ing Cruise. Dur­ing their two days stay from July 13 to July 14, the guests will be trans­ported around County Wick- low and visit the likes of Glen­dalough, En­niskerry and Avoca.

They will also be brought an a tour of Wicklow’s His­tor­i­cal Gaol.

On July 6, Russ­bor­ough House, Bless­ing­ton will be a feast of ac­tiv­ity, with ev­ery­thing from Arias on the lawn, to Guided Tours of Russ­bor­ough, to talks, tra­di­tional craft de­mos, 3D pho­to­graphs from all over the globe in 3D, 1920s 2D cin­ema footage from Turkey, China, USA and be­yond. Russ­bor­ough also in­vites you to en­joy a tra­di­tional feast BBQ, his­toric food de­mos, mu­sic, per­for­mance, his­tory, art, learn­ing and a cul­tur­ally in­spir­ing ex­pe­ri­ence that you will re­mem­ber for life.

Balt­in­glass and District cel­e­brates The Gath­er­ing 2013 with an event that prom­ises to be both spec­tac­u­lar and ex­cit­ing for lo­cal peo­ple and vis­i­tors alike. The Na­tional Bal­loon As­so­ci­a­tion is de­lighted to part­ner with the com­mu­nity, for the first time ever, for a three day ex­trav­a­ganza of Hot Air Bal­loon­ing.

Th­ese mag­nif­i­cent colour­ful air­craft will as­cend to a back­drop of the town's land­mark 13th cen­tury Cis­ter­cian Abbey right on the River Slaney, on the edge of the town. Tak­ing place in June, for three days Balt­in­glass will come alive with street en­ter­tain­ment, a Coun­try Mar­ket, face­paint­ing, mu­sic, sport­ing events, chil­dren's art com­pe­ti­tions, ex­hi­bi­tions and talks, and lots more.

The Polo Wicklow Arena, Kilpoole, has two dif­fer­ent days lined up as part of The Gath­er­ing. On April n7 Ire­land take on the USA in a match celer­brat­ing the 20th an­niver­sary of Polo Wicklow.

Any­one who comes along can also en­joy the food and shop­ping vil­lages, live mu­sic, danc­ing, Ir­ish dancers and cheer­lead­ers. Come dressed for your coun­try and you will re­ceive a dis­count at the gate.

On Au­gust 17 the Polo Wicklow Arena hosts an in­ter­na­tional polo tour­na­ment fea­tur­ing four in­ter­na­tional team. Ladies Day also takes place.

The Ir­ish Sail­ing As­so­ci­a­tion Gath­er­ing Cruise takes place in July.
