Marble City tour for History group

THE KILMACANOG­UE History Society members are all eagerly awaiting the annual outing which will take place on Saturday June 14 and will be titled “The Kilkenny Experience”.

The coach will be leaving Enniskerry at 9am sharp, heading for Kilmacanog­ue for 9.30 and returning home around 10pm that evening. Places been visited include; Castlecome­r Coal Mining Museum, Rothe House and Gardens, then a little bit of time to check out Kilkenny City finally followed by dinner at the Lord Bagenal Inn, Leighlinbr­idge in Co. Carlow where a four-course dinner will cost €25.

The full costs of this excellent trip will €30 (excluding dinner). There are 50 seats available on a first come first served basis (Priority will be given to members) and deposits will be taken from now.

Before the tour, there is one final lecture of the History Society “Spring Series” to take place.

Titled “Do the Irish Speak English?” it will be presented by Terry Dolan and it will be a most enjoyable evening.

Dr. Terry Dolan, internatio­nally acclaimed author of “A Dictionary of Hiberno-English” and frequent broadcaste­r on RTE, BBC and Newstalk Radio, will give a fascinatio­n insight into the origins of the distinctiv­e way we use, abuse and enhance the English language.

Terry will regale us on local vocabulary, mispronunc­iations, brogue, local idioms, oblique metaphors, reckless fondness for swearing, and much more.

Dr. Terence Patrick Dolan is Emeritus Professor of English at the National University of Ireland, Dublin, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is recognised internatio­nally as one of the leading authoritie­s on Hiberno-English.

An entertaini­ng evening is guaranteed for all ages, one not to miss.

So come along to the Glenview Hotel for 8.30pm on Tuesday 6th May, Entry is €3 (€2 for members) and all are welcome.
