Corr hoping to fire team to Wembley

- BARRY CORR

BARRY CORR is hoping to fire Southend United to Wembley and League One.

The striker bagged the only goal of the game as the Shrimpers secured a fifth place finish in League Two courtesy of a 1-0 win at Roots Hall over Burton Albion, the side they face on Sunday in the League Two play-offs.

A first half header from the Newcastle native earned United the momentum and bragging rights going into Saturday’s first leg and Corr, who has now netted five times in his last six games, is confident that his side can do the business against Albion again over the two legs.

“I think winning this game could give us a bit of an edge over Burton and we’re confident about our chances because we’re playing well at the moment,” said Corr.

“I’m sure Burton will disagree and point to how many changes they have made here but I think it was important to win the game to go in to the play-offs in the best shape possible.

“Winning also means we’re at home in the second leg which is what everyone seems to think is the best so we’ve given ourselves the best chance possible and now just need to make sure we perform.”

Corr’s side travel to Burton this Sunday for a noon kickoff, before hosting Albion the following Saturday.

Should Southend prevail, they will then tackle either Fleetwood Town or York City at Wembley, on Monday, May 26.

But dreams of playing in England’s third tier must be quashed for now, and United must focus on actually getting there first.

“We’ve got in to the play-offs but that means nothing if we don’t go up and we haven’t actually achieved anything yet,” Corr levelled.

“It will be the first time I’ve ever played in the play-offs so I’m looking forward to the games.

“I’m glad we have the extra games too because I’m starting to score a few goals again now and hopefully I can keep doing that in the play-offs to help get us up.”
