Walking the walk!
CABS walk took place in County Wicklow last Saturday, with walkers following a bus on foot from Newcastle to Bray.
They met at Bray Bus depot at 8 in the morning to get a lift to Newcastle Hospital. They then walked, some in fancy dress, from the hospital to Bray seafront for a big celebration party.
Over €100,000 has been raised over the past decade by a dedicated committee led by popular bus driver Dessie O’Toole.
CABS stands for ‘Charity Awareness Bus atha Cliath Staff,’ and fellow bus drivers Peter Fawcett, Brendan O’Brien and Willie Flood as well as Stephen Sheridan and Derek Brown were the team behind the fundraising drive to raise money for a long list of local charities.
Those causes have included Wicklow Homeless Five Loaves, Bray Baton Twirlers, Bray Women’s Refuge, OAPs Bray, Autism Ireland, Bray Carers, Festina Lente and many more.
Des always said that it would be a 10- year stint, and the end of the line was marked with a party organised by the local gardai.
The day included music, and a display of vintage and classic vehicles.
The gardai had some of their own older vehicles there as well as some modern ones, and even a couple of horses.
The day included free crime prevention advice, fire engines and the coast guard. While bad weather sent everyone indoors eventually it was a fun day nevertheless.
