HAYDAY FOR A MAYDAY

A great day was had by all at our recent gathering for the Bealtaine Festival. Many thanks to all who travelled to be with us last week. It was great to catch up with some old friends. Thank you to all who provided the entertainment for the afternoon. TIDY TOWNS

We are meeting at the church in the main street at 7pm Monday evenings. All are very welcome to help in what ever way they can. We ask people to take care in their areas, as we can be judged at any time for the tidy towns competition. NEWTOWN JUNIORS F.C.

Again it was an eventful week on the field for our teams. Our Under 8's travelled to Wicklow to take on Rovers and despite been on the wrong end of a defeat the team battled away but they were just a tad younger than their opponents. Aaron Hackett played very well in goal aided and abetted by others such as Jack Coghlan & Padraig Gammell.

The Under 9's after a couple of weeks without a game put in two excellent displays over the weekend to record two good results. On Thursday evening they were on the right end of a 5-2 home win over a very strong Wolfe Tone team. Darragh Heffernan scored twice and there was a goal each for Martin Kelly, Shane Synnott & Ryan Clarke. On the night among the players who had top games were Mason Melia, Nathan Murray and Shane Synnott.

On Sunday morning the team travelled to take on Wicklow Town and after another 40 minutes of end to end football our team came out on top by the odd goal in nine. Darragh Heffernan scored a fine hat trick, while Shane Synnott & Ryan Clarke also scored cracking goals. Among the players who played well were Martin Kelly, Devin Okundia, Oran Lane, Holly Eager, Mason Melia and Anastazya Razniak. Well done everyone.

Our Under 13's have hit excellent form recently and have been knocking in the goals as well and last Tuesday night when they secured another three league points with an 8-2 win over Enniskerry in Newtown. Mark McHugh scored four times, Kasper Razniak added two to make it nine goals in the last three games and there was a goal a piece for Cian Walsh & James McDonald. On the night it was an excellent all round team display.

Our Under 18's girls played their last home game of the season on Sunday (or they didn't) as Shelbourne didn't turn up for the kick off.

The fixtures upcoming are as follows for the period Tuesday 13th-Sunday 18th May: Under 8's at home to St. Anthonys ko Saturday at 11am; Under 9's - fixture to be confirmed; Under 10's at home to Roundwood F.C. ko Thursday 15th at 7pm; Under 12's - fixture to be confirmed; Under 13's away to Arklow Town 'B' ko Tuesday 13th at 7pm; Girls U-16's - fixture to be confirmed; Girls U-18's away to Shelbourne F.C. ko Sunday at 12.30pm (tbc) (KO TIMES & DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Two players from the club celebrate their birthdays in the coming week and they are both from the Under 9's i.e. Jamie Hamilton & Marcel Kocajda. Happy birthday lads from all at Newtown Juniors F.C.

A couple of players who are currently on the injured list are Amy Guilfoyle & Juliette Fortune and we wish both a speedy recovery.

We also must congratulate U-16's player Katie Miley who has been selected on the Ireland U-16 squad that travels to Switzerland 17th-21st May for a development tournament where Ireland will play games against Switzerland, Croatia and Belgium and as per usual we will let you know how the team and more importantly Katie get's on.

Finally just to let everyone know that the WDSL Cup Finals will all be held over the weekend of Sat.24th/Sun.25th May in Charlsland in Greystones. We have two teams in finals, the 12's will play Arklow Town 'B' while the 13's will take on Greystones 'A'. Both finals will be on the Sunday with the ko times to be confirmed.

We would hope their will be loads of supporters cheering both teams on and for the first time the WDSL will have a cup final programme for sale at a very reasonable €5 where pictures & details of the squads of all cup finalists will be included. It is hoped that parents of all players will purchase at least one programme each as a memento of the occasion. NEWTOWN UNITED F.C.

Congratulations to the management and players of the first team after they clinched the Premier league crown after a 2-1 home win over Rathnew last Tuesday week. The had to come back from a goal down after Rathnew had taken an early lead. Captain Dessie Waters equalised and Ross Odlum scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot.

Dave Whelan from the Wicklow League presented the cup to Dessie Waters before a large attendance. Again well done to all the players and the management of Rory Hackett & Trevor O'Brien.

Last Sunday week they were at home to Arklow United but they couldn't field a team so they gave a walkover. In their final game last Sunday away to St. Fergals the team won 4-1 to finish the season unbeaten in the league for the second year running. The team also scored more goals and conceded less than any other team. The goals were scored by Mark Fitzsimons, Sean Heffernan, Stuart Synnott and Shane Mooney.

The second team's season ended in defeat as they went down 4-0 at home to table topping St. Patricks last weekend.
