Most businesses donated to the Christmas lights display this year

-

THE event will have happened at the time of publication, however the subject of the turning on of the Christmas lights was raised at last Tuesday’s meeting of Greystones Municipal District.

Cathaoirleach Tom Fortune said that Taragh Hanley and Alison Banton had done a fantastic job in spearheading the event.

The plan was that Santa would arrive by fire engine, and a vintage car was on standby to drive him just in case the fire service was needed elsewhere.

Cllr Fortune said that there was a 96 per cent hit rate with the businesses in terms of contributions for the lights.

The meeting also heard that they will be going as far as the harbour.

Singer Kim Hayden was among the performers booked for the turning on of the lights.

Radio presenter Laura Wood was also to be at the ceremony in Burnaby Park.

Santa was there of course, and the evening was to include Christmas carols and festive fun.

Alison and Taragh took on the job of arranging the Christmas lights when it emerged in recent weeks that the Chamber would not be playing its usual role.

However they did not have time to arrange a road closure for the day.

Nonetheless they thought on their feet and arranged the park.
