Towns Cup final date changed as support blossoms

-

THE Provincial Towns Cup final, scheduled for this Sunday, May 1, has now been moved to the following Sunday, May 8, at 3.30pm in Ashbourne RFC in Meath.

This was a decision taken by the IRFU to allow Enniscorthy RFC complete their AIL play off game against Sligo RFC to decide who plays in the AIL next year.

Ironically, the result of this game will also decide whether Wicklow will gain promotion to Division 1A of the Leinster League next season. Wicklow RFC we need Enniscorthy to win to confirm their place in Division 1A.

Speaking to the Bray People ahead of the big final in a preview piece to be published in next week’s paper, Wicklow RFC captain Wes Wojnar said that the support has been massive from the local area.

“It’s really nice. We have four buses sold out going to the final and the local GAA team have a match on the day and they’re getting a bus straight from their match to our match just to watch us and support us.

“It’s bringing the community together. Normally where there would be rivalries between the GAA, they’ve actually come together to support us. It’s great. It’s something different,” he said.

There was more success for the Arklow RFC men last weekend when they squeezed past Clondalkin to earn a place in the Towns Cup Seconds Plate competition. They will face Edenderry at Nass RFC this Saturday, April 30 for a 3pm kick off.

Sadly, Greystones RFC’s bid to gain promotion from the AIL Division 2B to 2A came undone last weekend when they travelled to take on Sundays Well.

A superb start from the home team saw them build a massive first half lead and try as they surely did, Greystones just couldn’t claw back the deficit on the day despite seom heroic performances in the second half.
