1916 PATRIOT

This Saturday a gathering has been organised by IMPACT trade union to remember Harry Nicholls in Powerscourt graveyard at 11 a.m. when there will be a prayer service at the grave followed by the laying of a wreath on his grave followed by a short oration.

Then in St Patrick’s Church a speaker from IMPACT will give a short address about Harry Nicholls. This will be followed by refreshments in Powerscourt School Hall. Harry Nicholls is unique by being the only graduate of Trinity College Dublin who was an active republican rebel in 1916. When he was released from Frongoch in 1917, his ‘guarantors’ were his father and the Rector of Rathmines, the Revd. EH Lewis-Crosby. Later Harry Nicholls blamedPJ Hernon, the Dublin city manager, and a network of Knights of Columbanus, for the fact that he was never appointed City Engineer, despite his ability and all because he was a member of the Church of Ireland.

Harry Nicholls married Kathleen Emerson in 1919 and lived out their final years in Portmarnock, Co. Dublin, and then in Grafton Street, Dublin. Buried in Powerscourt Churchyard in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, his gravestone records that he was a ‘1916 patriot and founder of the ILGOU’, the trade union for local government officials.
