Man charged with as­sault on chil­dren

FOUR chil­dren were rushed to Tal­laght Hos­pi­tal on Fri­day evening after be­ing se­ri­ously in­jured. The four, who are aged be­tween three and 11 years of age, were dis­cov­ered in a house in Blain­roe, south of Wick­low town, soon be­fore 7.30 p.m.

A man in his thir­ties ap­peared be­fore a spe­cial sit­ting of Wick­low Dis­trict Court on Saturday evening, where he was re­manded in cus­tody to ap­pear be­fore Clover­hill Dis­trict Court to­mor­row (Thurs­day, June 9).

A MAN IN his thir­ties charged with as­sault of four chil­dren ap­peared at a spe­cial sit­ting of Wick­low Dis­trict Court, sit­ting in Bray, on Saturday at 9 p.m.

The de­fen­dant was charged with four counts of as­sault caus­ing harm, al­leged to have oc­curred in Blain­roe on Fri­day night, June 3.

The man, who is not be­ing named to pro­tect the iden­tity of the chil­dren, wore a grey T-shirt and grey track­suit bot­toms.

So­lic­i­tor Kieran Con­way pre­sented a state­ment of means to Judge Ger­ard Fur­long who granted le­gal aid.

Su­per­in­ten­dent Paul Ho­gan asked that the de­fen­dant be re­manded in cus­tody.

Mr Con­way made no ap­pli­ca­tion for bail.

Garda Neil Doyle told the court that the de­fen­dant was charged at Wick­low Garda Sta- tion at 7.37 p.m. on Saturday evening. He made no reply to each charge after cau­tion.

Judge Fur­long re­manded the mat­ter to Clover Hill Dis­trict Court on Thurs­day, June 9.

He or­dered a psy­chi­atric eval­u­a­tion as soon as pos­si­ble.

He added that the de­fen­dant is to ob­tain all ap­pro­pri­ate psy­cho­log­i­cal and med­i­cal as­sis­tance upon ar­rival at his place of de­ten­tion.
