Man charged with assault on children

FOUR children were rushed to Tallaght Hospital on Friday evening after being seriously injured. The four, who are aged between three and 11 years of age, were discovered in a house in Blainroe, south of Wicklow town, soon before 7.30 p.m.

A man in his thirties appeared before a special sitting of Wicklow District Court on Saturday evening, where he was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court tomorrow (Thursday, June 9).

A MAN IN his thirties charged with assault of four children appeared at a special sitting of Wicklow District Court, sitting in Bray, on Saturday at 9 p.m.

The defendant was charged with four counts of assault causing harm, alleged to have occurred in Blainroe on Friday night, June 3.

The man, who is not being named to protect the identity of the children, wore a grey T-shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms.

Solicitor Kieran Conway presented a statement of means to Judge Gerard Furlong who granted legal aid.

Superinten­dent Paul Hogan asked that the defendant be remanded in custody.

Mr Conway made no applicatio­n for bail.

Garda Neil Doyle told the court that the defendant was charged at Wicklow Garda Sta- tion at 7.37 p.m. on Saturday evening. He made no reply to each charge after caution.

Judge Furlong remanded the matter to Clover Hill District Court on Thursday, June 9.

He ordered a psychiatri­c evaluation as soon as possible.

He added that the defendant is to obtain all appropriat­e psychologi­cal and medical assistance upon arrival at his place of detention.
