ENNISKERRY

Junior Hurling League - Feargal Ógs 3-15, Kilmac/Enniskerry 1-5 - A very disappointing performance and result for us last Wednesday night in Ballywaltrim as the locals outplayed us in the second half to record a comprehensive victory.

The first half was a close enough affair with Fergals going in 0-5 to 0-3 ahead at the break.

We never got going in the second period and some fine long range scores and two quick-fire goals finished the game as a contest. The hard working James Cahill bagged a consolation goal for us near the end but the homesters drilled home a third goal with the last puck of the game to seal a deserved win.

Best on the night were Paul Kavanagh in nets who was solid and couldn’t be faulted for any of the goals, Luke Dillon and Clinton Donoghue in defence. Our midfield of Chris O’Toole and James Cahill worked hard throughout with Christy Fox the pick of the forwards. Tonight (July 6) we host Barndarrig in Enniskerry.

The senior footballers took a significant scalp in Division 1 of the league on Tuesday. They defeated Blessington in Blessington on the score 1-11 to 1-09. Victory, however, came at a huge cost. Dual player, Stephen ‘Chester’ Kelly, in the closing minutes suffered a very serious shoulder injury which will have him sidelined for some time. Peter Keane, Justin O’Brien, Stephen Kelly, Dominic O’Reilly and Darren Hayden were particularly prominent in the game.

The senior hurlers drew, 1-11 each (same score as the footballers in Blessington!), with Avondale in their opening game in the championship in Arklow on Sunday. The unanswerable question is would the balance have been tipped in our favour if the injured ‘Chester’ could have taken his place on the team. We wish Stephen a speedy recovery both for his own sake and, selfishly, for the hurling and football teams.

Camógaíocht - The club’s camógs at all levels were in action of late with the Under-14s, and Under-10s plus Under-8s being away in Avondale and Ballinakill respectively while the Under-12s and adults were at home to Annacurra and neighbours Kilcoole.

The Under-12s and Under-14s were in the charge of Ciaran Goff and Jim D’arcy while the Under-10s and Under-8s were looked after by Alison Goff, Jill O’Herlihy, Bill Malone and Ciaran.

For the Under-14s it was a case of ‘life must go on’ as the game clashed with the Ireland v Sweden feature fixture in Euro 16. Despite this huge counterattraction, a goodly entourage of parents travelled. This the coaches found very encouraging and for which they were very grateful.

The game itself proved to be a very exciting one with play switching between ends in an almost metronomic beat. The hosts stole it in the end by a single goal.

The coaches expressed themselves an-bhuioch to Catherine and Anthony, who managed the Rathdrum team, for their cordial welcome and helpful assistance.

Two evenings later the Under-10s and Under-8s took off for Ballinakill to take part in a ‘monster’ camogie blitz. Thankfully, as the location is windswept and can be uncomfortably cold at times, the night was warm and pleasantly balmy. The event which was very well run was thoroughly enjoyed by the young girls. The mentors were very pleased with their charges performance.

Friday it was the Under-12s turn and they played host to Annacurra. As was reflected in the final scoreline, 4-3 to 5-0, this was a closely fought goal-fest which kept the many spectators totally absorbed throughout its duration.

This team has come on in leaps and bounds and the quality of their camogie on the evening gave great satisfaction to its mentors.

Siobhan D’arcy was hugely influential at midfield while Florence Fogarty and Emily Walsh were very solid in defence. Amelia Gulliver proved a handful for the visitors’ backs.

Tuesday evening the adult team were at home to Kilcoole in a round in the camogie blitz.

The primary function of the competition is to encourage participation in the sport and teams, for the most part, approach the game motivated more by enjoyment than pursuit of victory.

The series has been attention-grabbingly named ‘Summer Sizzlers’. The ‘sizzlers’ has proven to be a well worthwhile undertaking and the Coiste Chondae is to be commended for having come up with the idea.

Éire Óg was honoured in having had two of its juvenile members, Aisling Goff and Jo Prendergast, chosen to travel to the iconic centre of iomáint (grudgingly admitted!) Nowlan Park as members of the Wicklow NMS selections which had been invited to take part in training sessions on its hallowed turf.

It proved to be a memorable experience for the 30 boys and girls involved.

The Liam McCarthy Cup was in attendance and the group got to meet four Kilkenny hurling stars Paul Murphy, Colm Fennelly, Richie Reid and Conor Fogarty.

Our club extends a Go raibh maith agaibh to Ronan Keddy, Emer Fahy and the rest of the NMS coiste for having organised the event.

FERGAL ÓGS

Mens Hurling - On Wednesday our men’s hurling team were in action when they hosted Kilmacanogue/Enniskerry in the junior hurling league. What started off as a tight affair with Kilmac/Ennis starting off strongly soon saw the home side take the lead with an early goal from Thomas Kinlan. Further scores followed before Kilmac/Ennis responded, finding open men with their passes within shooting range, and in doing so, registered their opening points from play.

The two teams traded points for the remainder of the first half, with a Kilmac/Ennis goal leaving only a couple of points between the sides heading into the half-time break. Some impressive defending from Alan Hughes and Garry O’Neill saw further Kilmac/Ennis scoring chances denied, while down the opposite end of the pitch, Paddy O’Brien started to find the uprights, securing his first points of the game to send Fergal Ógs in at half-time in the lead.

In the second half, Fergal Ógs moved up a gear and started to dominate the game, maintaining most of the possession, and cutting through the Kilmac/Ennis half with clever ball movement.

With the sliotar in hand, further scoring chances soon followed with Paddy O’Brien scoring five points in quick succession to strengthen Fergal Ógs lead. With their deficit now increasing, Kilmac/Ennis pushed further up the pitch, leaving space for the Fergal Ógs forwards and two goals soon followed, making for a significant lead for the home team in the latter stages.

With minutes left on the clock, Paddy O’Brien scored another three points, to take his own scoring tally to 12 points, which ended the tie as a contest.

At the sounding of the final whistle, the fulltime score was Fergal Ógs 3-15 Kilmacanogue/ Enniskerry 1-6. Well done to all the team and many thanks to the visitors for providing a terrific evening of hurling on Schools Road.

The team: Des Whelan, Alan Hughes, Declan Doyle, Gary Fitzpatrick, Garry O’Neill, Mark Dempsey, Martin Hill, Paddy O’Brien, Jason Sommers, Stephen Moorehouse, Thomas Kinlan, Daniel Kennedy, Willie Moorehouse, Frankie Cowan, David Dixon and Sean Maloney.

Men’s Football - Our men’s footballers played Kilcoole in the Division 4 league on Thursday on Schools Road. After having beaten Kilcoole in the reverse fixture last month, the visitors had revenge on their mind and flew out of the traps from the first whistle.

A few early Kilcoole points were matched by Fergal Ógs with Gavin Harris securing his first brace of points, courtesy of two frees, and Mark Doyle also getting his name on the scoresheet. Both teams were evenly matched with some standout performances from Fergal Ógs players helping to ease the side into the lead.

Cormac Kelly made an abundance of runs down the wing, creating problems for Kilcoole when in possession, while Kilcoole struggled to contain Ronan Twohig in midfield who was the architect of many of the Bray side’s attacks. David Dixon made life as awkward as possible for Kilcoole’s full-back, while Chris Carroll, Aidan Rush and Stephen Jenkins were in good form at the back, not allowing many balls past them.

A Kilcoole goal against the run of play saw the away team drift ahead with Fergal Ógs responding with a goal of their own to reign them back in.

The sides went in at half-time with Kilcoole leading by a couple of points.

In the second half, Fergal Ógs continued to build their points tally with Gavin Harris earning himself another couple of points from play, while Cormac Kelly and Mark Doyle also continued to find the uprights.

With nothing separating the sides in the latter stages, the game was anybody’s to win. Fergal Ógs made a couple of changes in an effort to try to break the deadlock.

Paddy O’Brien was brought on for John O’Toole at corner-forward and made an immediate impact, slotting the ball over the bar from a tight angle to put his side one point ahead with only minutes remaining in the tie.

A Kilcoole free down the opposite end levelled things up, with both teams battling it out for the winning score. Kilcoole found a goal scoring opportunity but the attempt was blasted against the bar, with the rebound being mopped up by Matthew Mackle and driven down the wing.

A spell of Fergal Ógs possession in the final minute saw Paddy O’Brien brake through the fullback line, but his attempt on goal was brilliantly saved by the goalkeeper. Another goal scoring chance was again denied by the keeper when Ryan White’s effort was saved, while a couple of wides from further out the field prevented the Bray men from getting the much needed score to put themselves ahead.

Time ran out for both teams with the full-time whistle heralding a draw, with a final score of Fergal Ógs1-15 Kilcoole 2-12.

Well done to all involved for providing a terrific evening of football.

Both teams will meet again in the championship at a later date.

Under-8s/Under-10s - Our Under-8s and Under-10s hurlers were in action on Friday evening when they played host to Barndarrig.

A great game of hurling was played out, with noteworthy performances across the pitch. Special mentions must go to Dennis Vickers, Brandon Mitchell, Cian Egan and Danielle Doyle who were in great form on the night.
