BALLINACOR

The Intermediate team travelled to Arklow on Sunday morning to take on Carnew. After a tough defeat to Stratford a week before we needed to bounce back and the lads delivered big time, winning by 18 points to 6. It was a great display by every player and the team showed great discipline all through the match. The win makes sure of our place in the quarter-final which will be in a few weeks time.

The club would like to send its sincere sympathy to the Keenan family, Aughrim, on the death of Pattie last week. RIP

RATHNEW

A wonderful historic evening last week for our fledgling ladies section of the club when our Under-14 girls travelled to Ballinakill to take on Arklow in the Division 3 Shield final.

This great little team are only in existence for two years and under the ‘enthusiastic’ tutelage of our own Tommy Murphy have come on brilliantly.

The girls really battled hard and you could see that all the fitness work they have been putting in is really paying off and the girls came away with a great win 2-05 to 2-03.

The girls were thrilled to be presented with the shield in front of some many of their supporters and we hope it is only the start of any more trophies to come. Keep up the great work.

The Under-12 girls had their sponsored solo/ run and raffle on Saturday morning. They had fundraised hard to get themselves some new gear and they all looked fantastic decked out in their new tops. Huge thank you once again to all who donated so generously to the raffle prizes or who bought tickets or supported in any way.

GLENEALY

The Junior hurlers had to settle for a draw in their final against Avondale last Saturday and they can count themselves lucky to get another bite of the cherry.

Avondale had the help of a strong wind blowing into the town goal in the first half, our defence were under constant pressure and did well to hold the Dales to a seven-point deficit at half-time, 1-6 to 0-2 with some stout defending by Philly Dunne on the edge of the square.

In the second half we had ample opportunities to win the game, but a lack of discipline and composure were nearly our downfall. We missed many chances from play and frees, and it took an additional time point from young Aaron Meade who kept his nerve to steer a 65 straight between the posts to earn a draw.

The replay is provisionally fixed for Arklow next Sunday morning at 11.30am. Check the fixtures in the Wicklow People next Wednesday for confirmation.

There was no winner of the jackpot in last week’s club lotto. The numbers drawn were 8, 15, 17, and 26. This week’s jackpot stands at €6,500.

ST PATRICK’S

Commiserations to the Wicklow ladies who lost to Tipperary in the All-Ireland Intermediate quarter-final on Saturday.

In what were awful wet conditions it made it tough for both teams to play with the game postponed 40 minutes.

The girls had a great championship beating Roscommon and Down in the earlier stages but unfortunately it wasn’t to be this year. Well done to our own Senior ladies who are part of the panel and also Mick Kavanagh who is part of the management team.

On Saturday our Junior hurlers were up against Kiltegan in the Junior ‘A’ hurling championship final in Arklow. At half-time the Pat’s men were ahead by two John O’Brien goals, 2-05 to 0-05.

In the second half with the wind, Kiltegan made it tough getting the equaliser in the dying seconds of the game. Both teams were all square when the final whistle blew: St. Patrick’s 2-09, Kiltegan 0-15.

Our Under-10 boys team travelled to Celbridge GAA on Saturday to take part in the All-Ireland Under-10 football blitz. Winning two out of their three group games they made it to the quarter-final where they faced Miltown Malbay from Clare. Well done to coaches Stephen Farrell and Paul O’Brien and all the players that took part!

Our Junior footballers travelled to Knockananna on Friday evening to compete against the home side in the Division 3 league. Knockananna prevailed on a score line of 1-12 to 1-05. Thank you to Knockananna for the hospitality after the game, very much appreciated.

Our Junior ladies take on AGB in the Junior Shield final this Sunday, August 28, in Aughrim at 2pm. It’s a great achievement for the team who narrowly missed out on an ‘A’ semi-final. We hope to see everyone there supporting the girls!

AVONDALE

Our Senior footballers travelled to a wet and windy Arklow last Friday evening to take on Tinahely in the championship.

On a difficult night for playing footballers both teams served up an exciting game in which we came out on top on a score line of 3-07 to 1-10 which now puts us into the quarter-finals.

Then on Saturday we returned to Arklow as our Junior hurlers took on our near neighbours Glenealy in the Junior ‘B’ hurling final.

This was a ding dong battle which ended up all square 1-10 to 2-07. Well done to both our teams and the very best of luck to the hurlers in the replay.

Our Senior hurlers are in action next Saturday so check fixtures for starting time. Our buy a brick campaign is up and running so as they say, buy early and buy often.

Knockananna played their final league game for 2016 last Friday night in Knockananna.

Weather conditions could not have been any worse with driving rain and winds making it extremely difficult to plat foot ball . Hats off to St. Pat’s for travelling on such a dreadful evening and they started the game with only 13 men.

The game itself wasn’t a great spectacle, and Knockananna led at half-time 1-06 to 0-03.

St. Pat’s started the second half with 15 and to their credit made a decent game of it and added 1-02 without reply.

In the final 10 minutes however, Knockananna pulled away and added a further seven points leaving the final score 1-13 to 1-5.

Scorers: Dean O’Neill 0-1, Declan Whelan 0-1, Patrick O’Keeffe 0-1, Johnny Wybrant 1-01, Derek Kavanagh 0-3, Stephen Hinchy 0-2, and Damien Byrne 0-4.

Next outing for the lads is the quarter-final of the Junior ‘B’ championship on Saturday evening in Arklow at 6.30pm against Newtown. Hope to see you all there. A huge thank you to Declan Byrne of Byrne’s forestry services, who sponsored the team training tops. This was very much appreciated especially as Declan sponsored the club new jerseys two years ago .

Knockananna GAA Club wish to extend its sympathies to Liam Keenan, John, Tom, and Liam on the death of Patricia Keenan last Thursday. May she rest in peace.

TINAHELY

Senior football - Our Senior team played Avondale in the Senior football championship last Friday evening in Arklow.

The weather on the night was bad for both teams with heavy rain and high winds. Avondale were first on the score board and soon after we got level.

Both teams exchanged scores for the half hour and it was Avondale leading at half-time by 1-4 to 0-6. Tinahely came out strong in the second half and won an early penalty which Tony Darcy slotted into the bottom left hand corner. The score was now 1-6 to 1-4, game on.

Tinahely kicked another point to go four points in front but Avondale responded with a goal and a point to level matters. With 10 minutes to go we were two points clear but Avondale grabbed their third goal of the night and eventually ran out winners on a score of 3-6 to 1-10. This loss has ended our involvement in the Senior championship for 2016 but we now must regroup for the Keating Trophy and get survival. Our next league match is away to Dunlavin on Tuesday 30th at 7.15pm.

Tinahely GAA club sends their sympathy to the Keenan family in Aughrim on their recent bereavement.

Junior football - Our game last week against Annacurra was cancelled in the Carter Cup so we wait to see who is up next.

Lotto results from August 15 – numbers drawn were 4, 5, 10, and 24. Bonus number: 14. No winner. Match three winner was: Mary P. O’Rourke. Next week’s lotto jackpot will be €3,600.

Adult football - Footballers are training away in preparation for the championship quarter-final which takes place in Bray next Wednesday (August 31).

Hard luck to our lads who played on the North District group team who exited the Senior championship last Saturday in Aughrim when they lost by three points to Newtown. There is a full match report on this game elsewhere in the sports section.

Junior’C’ Hurling semi-final - Barndarrig 5-7 Enniskerry/Kilmac 1-7- The old clique that goals win games was proved correct in this game when a few early 3 pointers gave Barndarrig a lead they would never relinquish.

Leading 4-2 to 0-3 at the break a deserved win for the Kilmacurragh men on a miserable wet night in Kilcoole last Wednesday.

Scorers for Enniskerry/Kilmac were Mick Byrne 1-0(pen), John Driver (0-1) James Cahill (0-6)

Best on the night were Luke Dillon, James Cahill, Bill Dickenson and Clinton Donoghue.

Enniskerry club would like to thank Jim D’Arcy, Pat Lally and Noel Driver for the work they’ve put into running and training the team this year and roll on 2017!

Ladies football - The girls bounced back from their disappointing Championship defeat to Coolkenno by posting a big win (5-16 to 2-3) over An Tochar in Roundwood last Sunday evening. Well done to the girls, still plenty to play for this season. Tonight (Wednesday 24) we play Stars of Erin in Glencullen in a challenge match.
