CEREMONY AT ALBERT WALK TO UNVEIL NEW NAMING STONE

CEREMONY AT ALBERT WALK

- BY MARY FOGARTY

A new granite naming stone for Albert Walk was unveiled last Wednesday evening by Cathaoirleach Stephen Matthews.

This is a way of enhancing its importance to its users, businesses and residents. ‘Hopefully the Walk will continue to attract engagement from the community of Bray,’ said Bray Tidy Towns in a statement.

Many volunteers including those from Tidy Towns, the municipal district and the Saturday and Wednesday groups gave their time and energy to wield pickaxes, spread soil, lay sleepers and manure beds. The volunteers from Tidy Towns, Common Ground and others engaged in extensive planting programmes, leading to a mix of plants and flowers which sustained the appearance of the walk during the last months.

The edible nature of the plants introduced by Common Ground Plants has been a great success, leading at least one establishment on the walk to make kale soup. The other grasses and plants along the walk have come from many sources and the gathering of plants has been a true community effort. A number of businesses, councilors and individuals have made donations towards the efforts to have the Albert Walk improved.

The Albert Walk has a rich heritage, with many historic businesses there over the years including The Roxy Cinema, The Manhattan Beat Club in the 60s, The Crypt in the 60s, Mick O’Toole’s Bingo, Rice’s comic shop and many more.

Bray Tidy Towns is inviting anyone with memories of the area to contact them through their Facebook page.
