MEN’S SHED

Our Autumnal schedule for the shed has been finalised and in it is the following courses, First aid, basic computer, sketching, wood turning, and hopefully a pottery class. We also hope to run a monster Christmas draw with lot’s of things Christmassy to be won, we are planning some visits to other sheds not to far away.

Always thinking of ways to support our venture we may have a wee kindling enterprise in the pipeline to bring in much needed funding, so shed members may be calling on potential outlets with which to launch our kindling bundles at a very reasonable price to help get ye all through the winter.

Men’s Sheds are a dedicated and friendly meeting place, a welcoming place, a place to share skills and learn new ones, or just awaken old ones, have the craic, enjoy the banter, and the divilment among the lads, being productive and having a laugh, while being valuable to ones community, but importantly being under no pressure whatsoever, so come to chat, enjoy a cuppa, read, relax, maintaining an active mind and body, you’ll love it honestly.

ICA GUILD

Well the season was due to get under way on last Saturday morning but unfortunately the weather gods decided that the ground needed a bit of watering and torrential rain fell for Friday night/Saturday morning meaning that the under-15s home game with Wolfe Tone had to be postponed.

On Sunday morning however the under-13s got their season under way when they hosted St Anthony’s in their first Premier Shield game. The team played some outstanding football in the first half where they raced into a three-goal lead thanks to goals from Charlie Sullivan, Fionn O’Reilly and Shane Dunleavy.

Antos pulled a goal back early in the second half but almost immediately O’Reilly restored Newtown’s three-goal cushion. The team continued to create chances but failed to take them and mistakes started to creep into their game. Antos scored two late goals but the 13’s held on for a deserved victory and all three points. On a day of many fine performances Rebecca Gillan and Jason Carthy were the pick of the Newtown players.

It was decided that at our latest meeting that Membership Fees for the 2016/2017 season should remain the same as last year. The only change this year is that club shorts and socks must be purchased from the club at a set cost. In previous years shorts and socks have been supplied free of charge but unfortunately due to mounting costs this can no longer be continued. Also please note that only club gear can be worn in matches and no other brand unless said gear is on order. Last Thursday we held a registration night for the under-13 and 15’s teams and this coming week we will be holding a registration night for all players from under-eights to under-11s. As is the case with all registrations there is a minimum €25 deposit to be paid on the night with 50% of fees to be paid by the end of October with the remainder due by the end of November.

Also a note to all parents, please remember that the coaches are all volunteers, they don’t get paid and they do what they do because in most cases they love the game so please this coming season please communicate with your child’s coaches especially when they text you regards training and matches. The above times are supplied by the respective team coaches and are subject to change but all changes will be notified (fingers crossed...).

Only one player from the club celebrates a birthday in the coming week and he is Aidan Heffernan from the under-nines. Happy birthday Aidan from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC

We will be starting up the ever-popular ‘Last Man Standing’ competition on Saturday, September 24. As per norm the cost is €10 per player and the Prize pot is 50% of all money taken in. Please support as all money raised goes towards the youth of the area.

Unfortunately due to lack of numbers we are unable to field an under-12s team in the WDSL or an under-16s girl’s team in the Metropolitan Girls League.

Regards the under-12s some of the players have signed to play for the under-13s. We would like take this opportunity to thank all players from the above two teams for their efforts last season and wish them the very best for the future.

On a sadder note the club extends their sincere condolences to the family and friends of John Meuer of Church Road who sadly passed away last week. May he rest in peace.
