ST PATRICK’S

On Saturday our Senior hurlers were out in the refixed Dacia Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final. They beat Avondale in Aughrim, scoring a strong 1-18 to Avondale’s 2-09. We now take on reigning champions Bray Emmets in the championship semi-final. Well done lads!

Hard luck to our senior ladies who had a tough match last Tuesday away to Bray Emmets in Bray in the ‘B’ championship semi-final but unfortunately came up short by the narrowest of margins.

Hard luck to our under-14 girls who lost by four points to Clan Na Gael in their girls Division 3 championship final at Newcastle GAA grounds last Monday evening, St. Patricks 1-06, Clan Na Gael 2-07.

It was an heroic performance by all the girls which also included seven under-12 girls on the panel, five of whom were on the starting 15. We lead 1-4 to 1-2 at half time and continued to lead by two points as the clock hit the 48th minute. However, the Kilmac/Enniskerry girls piled on some severe pressure in the last ten minutes which saw them go ahead and even though our girls tried in vain, right to the final whistle we were unable to get any decisive scores. Congratulations to Clan Na Gael and their manager Mark King, this their very first girls championship, only two years in existence. Well done to our girls who certainly made them earn it.

Had we taken more chances in the first half, that were presented maybe the result would have been different. On the evening team captain Eva Phelan was superb; her sister Julie at full-back wasn’t far behind. Heather McInerney, Nadia Lassarri and Grace Montgomery were excellent in the half back line. Others to really shine were Sarah Carroll, Holly McSorley, Molly Sweeney, Leanne O’Neill, Layla Hitchen and Keela Dunne. Aine Kavanagh in goal, Laura Newsome, Eve Cowdrey and Katie Shea all made noble contributions to the game. Kayleigh Keogh, Kate Connolly, Aoife Caffrey, Emer Kennedy came on as replacements and their efforts did not go un-noticed.

Once again well done girls, you were fantastic and you lost nothing in defeat. Team: Aine Kavanagh, Sarah Carroll, Julie Phelan, Laura Newsome, Grace Montgomery, Heather McInerney, Nadia Lassarri, Eva Phelan, Eve Cowdrey, Molly Sweeney, Holly McSorley, Layla Hitchen, Leanne O’Neill, Keela Dunne, Katie Shea. Subs: Emer Kennedy for L. Newsome Kate Connolly for K. Shea, Aoife Caffrey for Eve Cowdrey and Kayleigh Keogh for Molly Sweeney.

Hard luck to our under-14 footballers who came up against a very strong St Nicholas side in round three of the ‘A’ championship.

Well done to our under-12 boys who travelled to Dunlavin on Saturday to take part in a mini festival final against Donard-The Glen. In an entertaining encounter the home side persevered by one point.

Our under-10 boys travelled to Gorey on Sunday where they faced several strong Wexford teams in a blitz. They won five of their six games. The future is looking bright for our young footballers.

The weather was perfect for the game and it was Eire Og who were first on the board. Tinahely soon got level and slipped in front from sheer work rate. The lads were one point up at half-time and went three clear in the second half.

Eire Óg got back level again before Jason Cush kicked the winner. We won 12 points to 11 points. Team on the day was Niall byrne, Larry, Hooch, James Gilbert, Pee, Conor, Jamie. A strong first half was put in by all, and the AGB girls went into the break 5-12 to 1-05. The second half followed suit with the AGB girls remaining strong and determined.

An Tochar seemed to have regrouped during the half time break and came back determined against the AGB girls.

The AGB girls didn’t let it phase them and clocked up many more points. The match finished in AGB’s favour: 5-24 to 5-08.

AGB under-8 boys welcomed St. Pats to Pearse’s Park on Saturday morning to participate in a blitz. Both St. Pat’s and AGB are strongly represented at under-8 level and the pitch was full with young enthusiastic footballers, who haven’t had much opportunity this season to showcase their footballing skills in matches. A great morning of fun and football was had, and all the participants and parents were then treated to a lovely spread curtsey of the AGB under-8 parents.

The AGB boys celebrated in style and were presented with medals and a cup.

All the players, parents and coaches can be very proud of the lads. The future is looking bright for both AGB and Wicklow County with this group of players.
