Hozier makes time in schedule to support magical little Martin

-

Newcastle village came out in force on Friday night for a special ‘Martin’s Bucket List’ fundraiser taking place in the Castle Inn.

Six year old Martin Gibson O’Gara was born brain damaged and requires 24/7 care and attention.

There was a surprise guest at the fundraiser in the shape of acclaimed musician Hozier, who happens to be a near neighbour of Martin and a close friend of the Gibson O’Gara family.

Hozier took to the stage to sing a song he dedicated to Martin after the world renowned singer-songwriter insisted on finding a gap in his busy schedule so he could lend his support to the event.

He also stayed on to pull out the winning raffle tickets.

Martin’s parents, Sarah and Marty, were overwhelmed by the volume of support they received for the Castle Inn fundraiser.

‘We have to thank everyone for their efforts and their support, particularly Carmel Ruttle, who organised the fundraiser. She is one of Martin’s night nurses and none of this would have been possible without her involvement.

‘People were so generous with their donations of raffle prizes. All the acts on the night were great and we couldn’t believe the turnout.

‘It was like the whole village of Newcaslte came out on the night. It was an unbelievable occasion,’ said Sarah.

Also taking to the stage were the young band ‘Before and After’ who recently won the Bray Battle of the Bands, and Rob and John Kearns. A raffle and table quiz also took place. Martin will soon outgrow his buggy and his car seat so the funds raised will be used to purchase a specially adapted vehicle, while his buggy will become a wheelchair.

The amount raised hasn’t been finalised yet but there are plans to make a donation to the Jack and Jill Foundation. A St Catherine’s fundraiser is also in the pipeline.
