- By MARY FOGARTY

AN Garda Siochana is very proud to announce the launch of Wicklow’s second annual Garda Youth Awards.

‘Wicklow Gardaí recognise that a lot of great work is being done by the young people in many communities throughout County Wicklow. We wish to acknowledge and reward this work through the Garda Youth Awards,’ said a spokesperson for the awards.

Awards will be considered for nominated young people who make their communities or society in general, a better place to live in. There will also be awards for groups of two or more young people whose combined efforts contributed positively to their communities or others in general.

Special achievement awards will be considered for young people who have defied the odds or overcome difficulties during their lives.

The young people nominated must be aged between 12 and 21, and be permanent residents of County Wicklow.

Individuals and groups of two or more young people can be nominated.

Any member of the public, including gardaí, may nominate anyone whom they feel deserves an award. Nominations may come from family members or relatives.

The judging panel will consist of three independent, impartial individuals who work within County Wicklow and deal with youth affairs on a daily basis. The three judges are Alison Fox, youth officer for KWETB; Fiona Downs of County Wicklow Volunteer Centre, and Dermot O’Brien, coordinator of Wicklow Comhairle.

The project team is led by Garda Emma Skinner, a Juvenile Liaison Officer based at Bray Garda Station.

The official awards night will take place on Tuesday, February 4, in the Grand Hotel, Wicklow Town.

This year’s Garda Youth Awards has been kindly sponsored by Wicklow County Partnership.

Nomination forms will be distributed widely, throughout the county, to youth clubs, sports clubs, secondary schools and local Garda Stations.

They can also be obtained via the Facebook page ‘Wicklow Garda Youth Awards’ or by emailing emma.j.skinner@ Garda.ie. WICKLOW County Council intends to prepare Local Area Plans for Arklow, Bray and Rathdrum.

The plans will cover Arklow and environs and Bray Municipal District, including Enniskerry and Kilmacanogue.

The public consultation period lasts until November 11.

During this period submissions are being invited on the review of the existing Local Area Plans and the preparation of the new Local Area Plans. A ‘Consultation Issues Booklet’ has been prepared for each area which looks at the significant planning issues that each Local Area Plan will address.

A public information meeting took place in Arklow Municipal District offices on Tuesday, while a public information meeting is lined up for Bray Municipal District offices on Thursday, October 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Another public information day takes place in the Rathdrum Development Association (RDA) Hall, Rathdrum, on Wednesday, October 26, during the same times.
