Deepest sympathies to the extended family and friends of the late John Moody who passed away recently. John was a mainstay of the club in the 50s and 60s, he was a member of our first intermediate team to win the championship in 1961 and he won numerous Schweppes cups and Patrician cups. His finest hour however in the black and white came in 1964 where he had the game of his life in our first senior football championship win and where he cemented his place in Newtown GAA folklore. Thanks for the memories john, rest in peace.

Newtown also offer our deepest sympathies to junior player Richie Hamilton and the extended family and friends of the late Betty Hamilton who passed away last week. May she rest in peace.

Lotto rolls over again this week, there was one match-three winner who wins €200.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Unfortunately for some of our teams the heavy overnight rain on Saturday and Sunday mornings put paid to their games last weekend. The conditions did improve for a couple of our teams and they got their games played.

One such team was the under-11s who travelled to play Wicklow Town and came away with a 3-0 success after a very enjoyable game. Jake Robertson scored two more goals while Dylan Dunleavy added the other goal. Among the players who starred in a fine game between two fine teams were Cormac Chance and PJ Duffy.

For the second consecutive week the under-15s had to come from behind to get a result. They trailed 2-nil away to Wolfe Tone at half time but second half goals from Steven Coughlan and Ciaran Mangan ensured a share of the spoils. On a day it was a below par performance from the 15’s but among those who starred were Andrew Waters and Josh Kennedy. Frustratingly for the rest of our teams they had to suffer with the weather conditions.

The following are the fixtures for the week ending Saturday/ Sunday, October 22/23: under-8s away to St Anthony’s Green ko to be confirmed; under-9s fixture to be confirmed; under-10s fixture to be confirmed; under-11s away to Arklow Town White ko to be confirmed; under-13s at home to Wolfe Tone ko Sunday at 11 a.m.; under-15s at home to Wicklow Rovers under-14s ko Sunday to be confirmed (fixtures and ko times are subject to change)

The Development Squad is back in action and they practise every Saturday morning 10-11 a.m. outdoors on the top pitch. Cost per player each week is €2 (€3 when we practise in- doors).

Some of our teams are moving indoors for training from this week and the others will all be indoors by the end of the month. All players must wear indoor/astro runners and also must adhere to all rules governing goalpost safety etc. The following teams have confirmed their indoor training times: under-9s Thursdays at 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; under-11s Wednesdays at 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.; under-15s Thursdays at 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Three players from the club celebrate a birthday this coming week and they are Alana Synnott and Donnacha Eager-O’Brien from the Development Squad and Leon Moran from the under-11s. Happy birthday to all three from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC

Due to unforeseen circumstances our Last Man Standing competition has been delayed and will now start up on the weekend beginning October 29. As per norm the cost is €10 per player and the Prize pot is 50% of all money taken in. Please support as all money raised goes towards the youth of the area. If you are interested in taking part please give your name and details to any club member.

Just a reminder to all players that 50% of membership fees must be paid up by the end of October. For further information on all matters ‘Newtown Juniors F.C.’ please contact the Secretary at 087 6987653 or by email to hughienolan@gmail.com and you can also follow the club on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Finally on a sadder note the club would like to extend their deepest condolences to the family and friends of John Moody of Greystones and late of Newtown and to the family and friends of Betty Hamilton from Springfield Heights, both of who passed away in the past week. May they both Rest In Peace.
