Vandalism at monument to two deceased firemen
FAMILY members of the late Brian Murray and Mark O’Shaughnessy were disappointed and shocked to see graffiti scrawled on a monument to the two deceased firefighters.
Some time on Monday morning or earlier the words ‘I will survive’ were scrawled on the monument at Fr Colohan Terrace, between the Main Street and Vevay Road.
Council workers cleaned up the vandalised monument on Monday.
The people of Bray donated to the fund for the monument as part of a campaign to pay tribute to Brian and Mark.
‘It’s a fireman’s memorial and like any public servant, you expect respect,’ said Brian’s son Barry.
‘It doesn’t just belong to the family, it’s everyone’s.’
He said that a member of the family had spoken to gardaí who went and had a look and said they will examine any CCTV from the area, however, the family members don’t hold out much hope of the culprit being caught.
‘It wouldn’t appear that there are any cameras pointed at that spot,’ said Barry.
The monument, designed by artist Ciarán Patterson, was unveiled in September 2013.
Brian and Mark died in a fire at Adelaide Villas on September 26, 2007. Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area can contact Bray G arda Station on (01) 6665300.
