Novice boxers aiming to put on a knockout show for club

- By MARY FOGARTY

MORE than 20 novice boxers will step into the ring on December 3 to raise money for the Jai Sua Muay Thai club which has bases in Shoreline, Bray and Go Gym in Greystones,

Rob Carry of Jai Sua said that the opponents will face each other at Cuala GAA in Dalkey on December 3.

The money raised will go towards raising funds for the Muay Thai club, with some of their costs including equipment and insurance.

Each fighter was asked to raise €200 to cover expenses and the donation, while money will also be raised through ticket sales. They will also be donating 10 per cent of the proceeds to ‘ Team Mason’, a foundation for a boy with Cystic Fibrosis.

Lee Taylor is head boxing coach and looking after training the beginners for the big event. Steven Ogilvy and Charlie Kelly, two students in the Bray club, are helping Lee make boxers out of the white collar novices. They are training twice a week in Go Gym and working flat out for the big night.

‘ They all seem to be enjoying it,’ said Rob. ‘It’s a lot to learn in six weeks.’

He said that each fighter will be matched with someone who is at the same level, as some may have boxed before while others have never so much as put on a glove.

There will be men and women fighting on the night, and everyone will be wearing the correct safety equipment.

There are 25 white collar boxers at the moment, which is an odd number of course so somebody still has to be drafted in. ‘ There’s a rumour I might have to jump in myself!’ said Rob. There will be a raffle on the night with all of those proceeds going to the charity. At the end of the night there will be three pro Muay Thai fights to give the audience a taste of what it’s all about.
