Women stretch lead at top of Leinster League

The Garda struck back within minutes, lifting the pressure on Wicklow.

Effective ball carrying saw them crossover for an unconverte­d try. The following 15 minutes saw attacks and counter-attacks from both sides.

The Garda pack were relentless, breaking the first line of defence regularly and they eventually touched down for another unconverte­d try.

Wicklow regrouped and Meagan Parkinson scored again. This was followed up by an intelligen­t section of play with a kick up the pitch and Garda were under pressure.

Support from Sarah Gleeson sent her over the line, the conversion was good. The score at halftime stood at 24-10.

Wicklow started the second half strongly, attacking well.

A penalty was kicked into the corner and from the lineout a sublime offload in the tackle from Ciara Patrick to Leanne Sullivan made for a great try.

It was converted. Injuries then mounted for both sides and Wicklow lost their way for the next twenty minutes.

Garda launched waves of attacks, crossing the gain line time after time.

Hard running and good hands saw them score three times, leaving the score at 31-27 with seven minutes to go.

Garda looked to strike again, however Wicklow’s defence stepped it up a gear.

Finally, a turnover was won by Sarah Gleeson and swift passing allowed Kayleigh Sullivan to speed to the try line, securing a Wicklow victory after a really hard-fought encounter.

The conversion was scored and the final whistle blew for a bonus point win.

This was Wicklow’s toughest game to date, both sides played with great spirit which was a joy to see.

Wicklow send their best wishes to a Westmansto­wn/Garda RFC player that suffered an injury during the match.

This talented Wicklow side stretch their lead at the top of Leinster League Division 3 with another bonus point win.

However, they will feel that they have plenty of work to do before they travel to play Greystones in two weeks’ time.
