A big year for Arklow boxers
Season kicks off on January 7
ARKLOW boxers have started their preparation for 2017 in earnest by dilligent training over the Christmas period and by taking part in sparring sessions in St Michael’s Athy and Tramore.
The team for the Michael Andrews Championships, which start on January 7, are Michael Moorehouse (B1) who had a tremendous spar with Troy Moran (Tramore) on Thursday last.
Andriy Kulachenko (B1) was in action against Leo Flynn and had a cracking contest.
Sean Fleming (B2) was in with Charles Bray and boxed cleverly in all four rounds.
Damien Abiloga (B2) was well on top with Sean Bower while Daniel Byrne (B2) was in control against Paddy O’Connor.
Eimhin McCormack (B3) was in action against Billy Moran and gave a good account of himself.
Owen Moore (B3) showed good skills against Jeff Thomas while Liam Shaw (B3) boxed at long range against heavier looking Luke Grinsworth.
Jason Breen (B4) had a real cracker with Darren Wall.
Josh Whitmore (B4) had a tough spar with the older Nathen Dempsey while Daniel Feokrytov (B3) boxed and moved well against Sean Wall.
All the above boxers will be joined by Eugene Browne and Daniel Fox in the Michael Andrews Championships on January 7.
Also in action in Tramore were Sean Crowley (Y1) who totally outclassed Will Hazer in their spar.
Aaron Tuke (Y2) had a great battle with Luke Hurley and Padraig Keogh (Y2) was at his best against Alex Bower.
These three boxers will be part of an Arklow squad together with seniors Fergal Redmond and Sean Allen to travel to Liverpool on January 21.
Both seniors are busy sparring in their preparation for the National Senior Championships which were to be held early February but now I.A.B.A cannot decide when the competition will take place as provincial boards are seeking to run championships in February.
Arklow’s four ladies, Leanne Doyle, Amber Byrne, Teegan Farrell and Katie Twomey are training extra sessions with the boys to prepare for their Michael Andrews which is scheduled for January 21, and they are due to travel away for sparring next week.
As Arklow is the venue for the girls Leinster championships in April, the girls are looking to be in top class condition for the competition.
Another great boxing show to look forward to is an inter-county for the prestigious Paddy O’Leary Shield which will be held in The Grand Hotel, Wicklow, in February and will feature the best boxers from all the clubs in Wicklow and Wexford
Boxing sessions will return to normal on Monday, January 9, at 6pm, for the underage boxers.
Unfortunately the club cannot take on any more new members until September 2017.
