Busy schedule ahead for athletics in Wicklow

-

THE New Year for Wicklow athletics kicks off this Sunday with the masters cross country event in Shangannah at 11am. The women athletes will face a 4km circuit while the men will contest a 6km route and this promises to be a superb event.

January is set to be a busy month for athletes in Wicklow. On Friday, January 13, the cream of Wicklow’s athletic crop will descend on Roundwood for the Wicklow Athletes of the Year awards which kick off at 8pm.

Avondale House will play host to over 2,000 athletes on Thursday, January 26 for the East Leinster Schools Cross County Championships with a healthy contingent of Wicklow runners competing on the day.

On the bigger stage, Kilcoole AC star Fionnuala McCormack will look to go one better than the last two years in Edinburgh where she finished second in the Great Edinburgh Cross Country race.

Currently enjoying wonderful form, McCormack will relish the opportunity to strut her stuff on a course that really suits her abilities this Saturday, January 7. The race will be televised on RTÉ.

From there, the wicklow star will head for Antrim to take part in the Antrim International the following weekend.

Beyond January, the next major thing on the athletics calendar in Wicklow will be the 10km and half marathon in aid of Wicklow Hospice on Saturday, February 25.
