Novel way to solve this doggy ‘foul up’

January 1985

BRAY resident, Barbara Hyland, has come up with a novel way of collecting ‘doggie droppings’ in order to keep the footpaths and seafront from being pebble-dashed by the call of nature.

Her idea is to collect the waste in a bag while bringing the dog for a walk and then deposit the bag in a dustbin. But where on earth did this idea come from?

Said Barbara, ‘following my letter to the Bray People on the Dail Yuke Puke I received a letter from another local resident saying that while the Dail episode happens only once a year, the filth left by dogs occurs 365 days a year. ‘While I echo his sentiments about this I would like to correct him in his statement where he says that I am one of the dog owners who allows my dog to filthy the pavements. ‘But it is done and we know what is the cause of it yet what is being done about it?’ The correspondent’s letter prompted Barbara to inquire from a friend about devices used in America to remove ‘accidents’ from the footpaths and roads. This device has not yet arrived but in the meantime Barbara has thought of her own device to save pedestrians slipping and jumping from one end of the seafront to the other.

‘ Take one child’s space and cut it down just enough to have a grip on it then place one plastic bag inside the other and put the spade into the inner one and the droppings into the outer one. Then it can be an enjoyable walk for you and your dog.’
