YOUNG SCIENTIST

Donovan Weiss Webb (TY) won a Highly Commended and a Display Award in the Intermediate Technology section of the BTYSTE last week for his app which helps to guide visitors around Mt Usher Gardens and to identify trees, as well as creating a game based on finding different tree types.

Donovan was visited by Minister Simon Harris TD, Minister of State Andrew Doyle TD and President Higgins, along with all of his TY classmates and 60,000 others over the course of the exhibition. Well done, Donovan.

CAREERS

East Glendalough welcomed Carlow Institute of Technology and Shannon College of Hotel Management to give a careers presentation to senior students last week. Students are busy finalising their CAO choices ahead of February 1 deadline.

CROSS COUNTRY

Good luck to all EGS Cross Country runners competing in the East Leinster Cross Country Championships in Avondale this Tuesday. We are very lucky to have a dedicated field of runners lined up who have put in a lot of hard work and training for this.

ORIENTEERING

Congratulations to Nathan O’Connor on winning the first year Leinster Schools Orienteering League 2016/2017. Nathan had to attend three orienteering events based around Dublin and compete against a number of different schools.

A great achievement for a newcomer to orienteering.

TRANSITION YEAR NEWS

This week has seen the first of the TY thesis visits to the principal Mr Petrie. These meetings involve students discussing their progress to date with Mr Petrie and answer any questions he might have. As well as giving the students the benefit of his vast previous experience of thesis projects, the meetings also serve as a motivational tool to keep students on track with what will be their most significant piece of work this year.

Also this week students undertook their second session with PACT, an organisation that delivers student focused seminars around issues facing teens in day to day life. Our students were singled out for praise with their maturity and openness both being commended.

Elsewhere the stage is really taking shape, a Midsummers nights dream on a rotating stage is starting to look like a reality. Thank you to all the hard work of the two sets classes and of course Mr Gargan and all his actors.

We have also seen arts and crafts class making tin can lanterns, the wood work crew making everything from guitar stands to candle holders and the car restoration group finally getting our Triumph spitfire back on four wheels and rolling.
