GAA CLUB NOTES

We were all saddened to hear of the sad passing of Jim Mooney during the week; Jim was a major force within the club from the fifties up to the present day and put his heart and soul into making things happen behind the scenes. Jim was without doubt a part of Newtown GAAs history and will be forever remembered, we express our deepest sympathy to Kathleen and his extended family and friends. Rest in peace Jim.

Newtown are delighted to have a large number of kids playing for our fast growing juvenile sides, more kids means more helpers so if you feel you are in a position to help in any capacity our future GAA stars then please get in touch as it takes much more than a manager to run each team. You can give Tom a ring at 087 6611480 or Shay at 087 2699620.

Hard luck to the Wicklow schools team and our own Seán Gregory, who were narrowly beaten in the Leinster semi-final last week.

Newtown ladies are actively looking for a management team for the new season and will be holding interviews in the coming weeks. All interested parties can contact the team via email at newtownladiesgaa@gmail.com.

There is a good stock of club gear now available to buy for any enquiries regarding club gear please contact Ruth at 087 7472682 or Amy at 086 3332195.

Tickets for the national club draw are on sale till January 30, some great prizes on offer. First prize is a car and all money raised by the club through the sale of tickets goes to the club, so why not buy a ticket, support the club and maybe win a fantastic prize. Tickets are available from all committee members.

Numbers drawn in the lotto were 7, 23, 24 and 25, there was no winner but two matched three numbers receiving €100 each. This week’s jackpot is €3,200.

If you have any club related notes for inclusion in the weekly notes, please forward topronewtown@gmail.combefore Sunday 6 p.m. for issue the following week.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Our under-8s had an action-packed an exciting time at the WDSL Futsal competition in Aughrim last Sunday. They played plenty of games, scored some goals and played some excellent football. Well done, all.

Our 9’s enjoyed an excellent game away to Glencormac United where Liam Kinlan and Pat Carey found the net. Best for Newtown were Mikey Synnott, William Valentine and DJ Keating.

The under-10s were involved in a high scoring game where the attackers certainly had the better of things as St Anthony’s defeated our team 8-5. Jake Robertson (2), Cormac chance, Matthew Doyle and Cathal O’Toole scored the Newtown goals.

The under-11s came out on top at home to St Anthony’s thanks to a Mason Melia hat trick in a 3-2 win. Best for Newton were Aaron Hackett, Pádraig Gammell, Eoghan Fox and Hannah Martin.

Our under-13s were idle but some of the squad were in action playing for the WDSL Inter League team in games against the Drogheda League in Greystones. Martin Kelly and Darragh Heffernan played for the under-12s while Bobby Dowling and Jason Carthy played for the under-13 side. Well done, lads.

We have a date for the under-13s Premier Shield final against Wick- low Rovers ‘A’. The game will kick off at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday the fifth Febuary at Vartry park in Roundwood. It would be great if as many supporters as possible turned up to cheer the team in what will be a very difficult game.

Finally regards the under-13s we must put on record our thanks to Joe Martin, who was part of the coaching team for the 13’s for the past couple of seasons and who has unfortunately stepped away from the team at the start of 2017. Thanks Joe for all your efforts and commitment. Our under-15s made the short trip to Enniskerry but they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat. Steven Coughlan scored a fine goal late on but two first half goals from Enniskerry proved decisive.

Our Last Man Standing competition has gone into an unprecedented Week 10 and from the 10 players that were standing going into week 9 we have unfortunately lost just one player meaning that we are left with 9 players still standing. Week 10 fixtures will be for Tuesday, January 31,/Wednesday, February 1. You can follow the progress of the competition on our Facebook and Twitter pages. The winner of the competition will receive €470. Thank you to everyone for their continuous support.
