NEWTOWN ICA GUILD

Plenty of action last weekend but a mixed bag in regards of results. The under-8s travelled to Arklow to take on Town and both teams played out a very close series of games. Albie Chance and David McCormack scored the goals for Newtown.

The under-9’s hosted near neighbours St Anthony’s and both teams played out a series of games full of exciting football. Star players on the day for Newtown were Eva Carey, William Valentine and birthday boy Luke Turley, who helped himself to a five-minute hat trick in the last game. Other players who found the net included Aidan Heffernan, Ryan Collins and Pat Carey.

The under-10s travelled to play Wicklow Town and lost out by the odd goal in five. Despite been down four players owing to illness the players on duty put in a good shift. Cormac Chance and Jake Robertson scored the Newtown goals.

The under-11s had a fruitful trip to Carnew as they came home with the win in a 9-goal thriller winning 5-4. Mason Melia (2), Ryan McMahon (2) and Eoghan Fox. Best players on the day were Iggy Szpilka and Paudie Gammell.

Not a good day at the office for the under-13s as they went down 4-1 at home to Arklow Celtic. Apart from the opening exchanges and the last five minutes Arklow dominated proceeding­s. Fionn O’Reilly scored the Newtown goal with a fine effort late on.

The 15’s travelled to Bray to take on Wolfe Tone and despite scoring the first and last goal of the game Wolfe Tone scored three times to take all the points in a 3-2 win. Newtown’s goals came from Steven Coughlan and a Ryan Smillie penalty.

The following are the fixtures for the weekend of Saturday/ Sunday Febuary 4/5: under-8s at home to St Anthony’s ko Saturday at 12.15 p.m.; under-9’s away to Greystones ‘B’ ko to be confirmed; under-10s at home to Greystones ‘A’ ko Saturday at 10.15 a.m.; under-11s at home to Enniskerry Red ko Saturday at 11.15 a.m.; under-13s vs Wicklow Rovers ‘A’ ko Sunday at 11.30 a.m. (Shield Final) at Vartry Park Roundwood; under-15s at home to Greystones ko Saturday at 11 a.m. (Cup game). (Fixtures and KO times are subject to change).

The Developmen­t Squad is back in action and they practise every Saturday morning 10.11 a.m. indoors in the Community Centre (Sports Hall). Cost per player each week is €3. Regards the Indoor Hall all players must wear indoor/astro runners and also must adhere to all rules governing goalpost safety etc.

The teams have confirmed their training times for the week beginning Monday, January 30: Dev. Squad on Saturdays 10.11 a.m. (February 4.)

Under-8s on Wednesdays 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (February 1); under-9’s Thursdays 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (February 2); under-10s on Tuesdays 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (January 31); under-11s Wednesdays 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. (February 1); under-13s on Wednesdays 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. (February 1); under-15s Thursdays 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. (February 2).

Wicklow GAA is running an online Foundation Football course which is certified over the next few weeks, registrati­on and instructio­ns can be found at learning.gaa.ie. If you would like to complete or know of anyone who wants even to be involved in a minor capacity it is a useful course to complete.

We are delighted to have a large number of kids playing for our fast growing juvenile sides, more kids means more helpers so if you feel you are in a position to help in any capacity our future GAA stars then please get in touch as it takes much more than a manager to run each team. We are still short of help for some of our teams and may not be able to enter teams at all ages due to lack of mentors, please give Tom a ring at 087 6611480 or Shay at 087 2699620 for more info.

Tickets for the national club draw are on sale till January 30, some great prizes on offer. First prize is a car and all money raised by the club through the sale of tickets goes to the club, so why not buy a ticket, support the club and maybe win a fantastic prize. Tickets are available from all committee members.

This week’s jackpot is €3,400 as the lotto rolled over, numbers drawn were 6, 12, 13 and 15 and there were three match-three numbers who won €70 each.
