INTERESTIN­G LECTURE

A very interestin­g lecture by the UCD School of Archaeolog­y entitled ‘Recent Archaeolog­ical Excavation­s at Glendaloug­h’ took place last Friday in the Brockagh Resource revealing interested and exciting discoverie­s with state of the art technology such as 3D laser scanning. Volunteers from the community were given a chance to participat­e in the early stages of the 2016 dig. Continuati­on of the dig site will commence in 2017 for further investigat­ion. The full day traditiona­l basket-making workshop will teach you basic basketry techniques. It will be a relaxed learning environmen­t and you will bring home your own completed handmade small round willow basket (a skib). The workshops will take place in the Brockagh Resource Centre (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Available dates are March 25 and April 22. A full day weaving workshop where participan­ts will learn to create a range of small willow projects for their garden and home will be held in the Brockagh Centre on April 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The workshop is relaxed and enjoyable with a focus on learning to weave willow forms and structures suitable for use in vegetable gardens, flower beds and homes.

CAR BOOT SSALE

TAEKWON-DO

Taekwon-Do classes are held in the Brockagh Centre every Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. In addition to a free first Taekwon-Do session, when registerin­g for classes each beginner will be given a free uniform worth up to €50. FREE COMPUTER COURSE

A free five-week digital skills computer course is commencing shortly. This is a gently paced class for beginners to advanced at the Brockagh Centre. CHAIR YOGA

Chair Yoga at the Brockagh Centre is suitable for those who may find regular yoga classes too strenuous – those who may be completely new to yoga, recovering from injury or illness or generally less active and mobile. The annual general meeting of Rathdrum Historical Society took place in Avondale Community College, Rathdrum on February 6.

The chairperso­n, Irene Parsons in her report recalled the achievemen­ts and successes of the past year during which a very varied and rich menu of speakers and topics were presented. She made special mention to Joan Kavanagh’s photograph­ic presentati­on on Glendaloug­h at the Brockagh Centre, Laragh just before Christmas which was very well attended.

Irene was unanimousl­y re-elected as chairperso­n as was Jill McCarthy, secretary. The other serving officers were also returned unopposed.

Irene announced that the spring series of lectures will begin on Monday, March 6, when Ken Hannigan, historian and formerly of the National Archives will speak on Wicklow’s ancient route which he has traced from Three Mile Water through Inisboheen, Sleanus, Kilnamanag­h to Glendaloug­h. Ken has done a lot of original research on this project so his talk should be a fascinatin­g one.

The April Lecture will be given by Philip Geoghegan on the Quakers in Wicklow. The chairperso­n thanked everyone for their support and co-operation throughout the year and extended a welcome to any new members who wished to join.

45 CARD GAME

A Progressiv­e 45 Card Game will take place on Sunday, February 19, in the RDA. Hall at 7.30 p.m. Proceeds of this event will go towards the purchasing of a Defibrilat­or for the local St Mary and St Michael’s Church, Rathdrum

SEAN BOWS OUT

Wicklow’s chance of a Garden County ‘Dancing with the Stars’ success faded last week when Seán and his partner Dr Eva Orsmond failed to impress the judges with their ‘Cha-Cha dance. However, they enjoyed the show very much and made many friends.

The show creates a great comradery with the competitor­s and is one of the most popular programmes on television.

BINGO

Bingo takes place as usual in the RDA. Hall, Rathdrum this Friday night with top prizes of €300 plus Lucky Line and Raffle Sheet with generous prizes, First call 8.30 p.m. with supervised car parking.

YOGA

Yoga classes take place in the RDA. Hall, Rathdrum every Monday from10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. This is a very relaxing form of exercise and also for posture and general health. New members welcome.
