MENS SHED

If the support and goodwill of our community and surrounds for the Men’s Shed was ever doubted, on Thursday last it was surely put to bed when we were entertained superbly by the Garda band and up and coming local talent young Bobby Dowling, all those who attended were full of praise for both, and for the work carried out by the shed venture, money still coming in from this event is very gratifying indeed, and for this success we are greatly indebted to all you very generous patrons who purchased tickets or helped otherwise.

The money raised by events such as these help to keep a shed over our heads and provide somewhat of a sanctuary for the retired, the lonely, for those between jobs, and most of all for when that old dark cloud descends to engulf, we try to be that wee ray of sunshine to all.

At the moment in the shed allotments ground has been revitalised with lot’s of cowsh. sorry farmyard manure generously supplied by local farmer Mr Mooney for which we are grateful, it has been worked into the soil twice, once by the members and then again by the ‘Girls’ (hens) who by the way are natural gardeners, and our reward for letting them do this is a packaged meal supplied each morning (an egg). Plans are being put into place to sow the following: potatoes, carrots, onions, scallions, beetroot, lettuce cabbage, cucumber, strawberries, broad bean and runner bean etc etc.

I’m sure there are other plans being concocted, especially for St Paddy’s Day parade, but mumbles is all I hear, as members have become wary of my presence, ‘ear wigging’ is all I’m accused of when seeking information at times such as these, so I’m afraid we must wait and see.

On Tuesday last, February 28, our AGM was held in the Ned Carroll room and was attended by a large membership minutes of the AGM are posted on the shed notice board, officers Elected for the coming year 2017 are as follows; president; James Carroll chairman; John Kelly V. Chair; C. Gammell secretary; G. Sinnot treasurer; Mary Kelly. Asst. Treasurer; P Kelly. PRO. J. Byrne. We thank you all again for your kindness and great support, and remember postings of shed shenanigans and happenings may be seen On Facebook with photos, so drop by any time for an oul cuppa or chat.

TIDY TOWNS

Newtown Tidy Towns hosted their ‘Spring Clean Day’ on last Saturday, and it was a massive success. Last week we asked for volunteers and your response was phenomenal, with over 40 people turning up on the day. Tidy Towns, on behalf of the community, would like to thank each and everyone for making this essential pilot venture such a success. The turnout has demonstrated a great community spirit that is alive and well in Newtownmountkennedy, and bodes very well for the future of our town. It seems that we all want to make this town a better place in which to live.

The volunteer teams covered the Entrances to the town, Main Street, Church Road, Season Park, The woodland walkways, Roundwood Road opposite ‘Wicklow Hills’, Areas around the Schools and the entrance to Springfield Heights. An incredible total of 40 plus bags of trash was collected, and what a difference it has made. The village and environs have never looked so well, and all thanks to the 40 generous volunteers who turned out in force on the day. Well done.

We in Newtown Tidy Towns want to enhance our village in many ways, by flowers and planting, litter picking, community music and cultural events, fun family events, development of local amenities, heritage pursuits and more.

We always need your help for these projects. Do please contact secretary Grace at 087 1477507, or Annick at 085 1329713 if you are interested in any particular venture. Make Newtown pretty. Do check the Newtown notes each week for ‘Tidy Towns’ updates.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Only two of team’s games survived the weather and both games resulted in good wins for Newtown Juniors. The under-10s travelled to Tullylusk to take on Avonmore and came home with an excellent 3-2 win. They had led 3-0 thanks to goals from Matthew Doyle, Jake Robertson and Cormac Chance but two late goals from the home side produced an exciting finish to the game. Among the players who played well were Cillian Coffey, Dylan Dunleavy and Evan Fahey.

After our pitch was deemed unplayable our 15’s had to play their cup quarter final away to Greystones and to be fair they didn’t let it get to them as they made the semi-finals after a 5-0 victory. A first half goal from Ryan Smillie was added to by second half goals from Luke Kelly (2), Andrew McMahon and Alex Byrne. On the day among those who starred were Josh Odlum, Seán Douglas and Stephen Doran.

A couple of our players are currently on the injured list and we wish them all a speedy recovery to action i.e. Pat Carey and Liam Kinlan from the under-nine’s and Conor Kavanagh from the under-15s.
