New camogie season kicks off this weekend

-

THE inter-county season has kicked off with two challenge matches last weekend in preparation for the real thing this coming weekend.

Minors - On Sunday, the Wicklow Minor squad had a very productive outing against Thomas Davis on their Tallaght floodlit all-weather pitch.

The players adjusted well to unfamiliar surroundings and, with the speed and intensity of the occasion, are well set up for the start of their competitive season.

On Saturday (March 11), the Minors participate in the All Ireland Strike for Glory competition in Abbotstown. There, they will take on Monaghan, Kerry, Mayo, and Donegal.

U-16 - The U-16 county team also saw its first action of the sea- son on Saturday in Bray against Ballyboden St Enda’s B team. Ballyboden St Enda’s is one of Dublin’s biggest camogie clubs so this match was excellent preparation for the Leinster Championship.

The Wicklow girls got off to an excellent start and quickly got a couple of scores on the board. Ballyboden competed strongly and there was very little in it at the first break.

As time progressed, the Wicklow girls pulled ahead and the match of three 20-minute periods saw Wicklow come out ahead 6-04 to Ballyboden St Enda’s 3-01.

It was a very competitive match with both sides battling it out for possession of the ball throughout. The Wicklow girls played well together - excellent support of each other, great passing and teamwork.

The team’s first match of the season against Louth was postponed from Sunday until next Sunday, March 12.

Best of luck to both county panels at the weekend.

Fixtures - Meanwhile, club fixtures for 2017 have been issued to club secretaries.

April sees the kick-off of the Adult, U-16 and U-14 Leagues, with the U-18 League pencilled in for end-June and the U13 Summer Cup in a blitz format for dates in June, July and September.
