NEWTOWN JUNIORS

-

Plenty of football last weekend as the rain took a break and the sun shone.

The under-8s travelled to take on Arklow United Stars and after a series of games there was only a couple of goals in the difference in the end.

Among the goals were David, Leighton, Ryan, Leon and Lucas.

The under-9s made the short trip to St. Anthonys were there was a couple of excellent individual performances. Among the goals were Mikey, Sebastian, William and Aidan while Dylan and Frank did very well.

The under-10s had an excellent display away to Greystones where they arrived home with a 5-0 win. Goals from Jake Robertson (2), Cormac Chance, Cathal O’Toole and a screamer from PJ Duffy sealed the win. Best were James Allcock and new signing Rose Kelly Tynan.

The 11s had their usual humdinger against Arklow Town Black where they trailed 3-nil, fought back to restore parity thanks to a Mason Melia hat-trick but were edged out in a seven-goal thriller by a last minute Arklow goal. Well done to both sets of players. Best for Newtown were Jack Coughlan in goal, Aaron Cawley and Paudie Gammell.

It was cup semi-final action (first legs) for both the 13s and 15s at home last weekend and after two games with plenty of drama both ties are very much alive. The 13s had to come from behind to take a narrow advantage into the second leg after conceding just before half time.

With 10 minutes remaining Bobby Dowling scored from close range after a Martin Kelly cross wasn’t cleared. With five minutes remaining Fionn O’Reilly made a yard of space for himself and drove the ball into the bottom corner from 10 yards.

On the day, among the players who starred for Newtown were Rebecca Gillan and Darragh Heffernan.

A goal with virtually the last kick of the game from Ben Moran gave our 15s a share of the spoils at home to Enniskerry and left it all to play for in the second leg in a couple of weeks.

On the day though there was lots of honest effort the team will admit themselves that they can play better and will probably have to do so if they want to make the final.
