Greystones landfill protected by rock

-

AN old landfill at Greystones is protected by rock, according to Wicklow County Council officials.

Unlike a similar dump at Bray’s north beach, the area of the former landfill in Greystones is protected by a rock revetment.

In a report prepared for members of Greystones Municipal District by Sean Quirke, he told them that site investigations forming part of the EIS prior to construction of the harbour indicated that material at the location was inert.

Meanwhile, coastal protection works are scheduled to be carried out this year.

Works will include the placement of additional beach nourishment material.

The locations for works is to be decided on foot of a recently completed survey.

The survey of the area has been carried out and forwarded to ARUP for compilation of a report and recommendations.

As part of the harbour project the works included sealing off the landfill cell using a bespoke geosynthetic lining system and spreading of cell capping material and landscaping and seeding to form part of a public park. Further coastal protection works will eliminate future coastal erosion along the boundary of the old dump location.

Cllr Tom Fortune had raised the issue of the dump and asked for a report on its status. He said that he was not satisfied with the level of response.

‘I asked for a one-pager on the status,’ he said. ‘I would like to be assured everything is under control there.’

‘I want more information on the level of projection,’ said Cllr Fortune. ‘ There’s a lot of development going on top of it,’ he said.

Cllr Jennifer Whitmore suggested that the members ask for a copy of the survey, which may cover this.

At a meeting last October, cllr Fortune had requested a suspension of standing orders to discuss his concerns about alleged leaching from the dump to the beach.

Subsequently, Director of Services Sean Quirke told District Administrator Myra Porter that it is his understanding that works in the area related to a blocked sewer that pre-existed the harbour development and is unrelated to it. Works were carried out by the water services section to remedy the problem. THE La Touche Hotel is on the derelict sites register, members heard at last week’s meeting.

A notice has been sent to the owners, District Administrator Myra Porter told the members.

‘Someone will die and we will know all about it,’ said Cllr Grainne McLoughlin.

The members heard that the owner has submitted a proposal regarding securing the premises. CLLR Derek Mitchell said that Greystones appears to get less to spend than other districts. He said that they get 60 per cent less, while contributing more in property tax.

District Manager Michael Nicholson said that there is a reason for every item. ‘Under the arts programme, for example, Bray has the Mermaid,’ he saiid.

Other factors include lenghts of roads, and quantity of libraries and fire stations.
