MUSIC SCHOOL FINAL
Last Thursday the school received some fantastic news regarding this exciting event. For the first time the Waltons Music for Schools Competition Finalists’ Concert which took place in the National Concert Hall on Tuesday, May 2, was webcast live by RTÉ Lyric FM.
This not only means that the many other students, parents and friends who would have liked to attend but couldn’t be accommodated will now be able to see the concert, but also that other schools around the country can do so – and hopefully be inspired by the great music-making they see to enter the competition next year.
The webcast can be viewed on this web page: rte.ie/lyricfm/ concerts.
RUGBY TRAINING TOPS
Following the recent rugby success in the school we were delighted last Tuesday to host a presentation of training tops to both the senior and junior teams. We welcomed Jamie Bolger on behalf of Ken Bolger Coaches to make the presentation and would like to take the opportunity to thank Bolger Coaches for their sponsorship and also to the parents’ association for their contribution which is also very much appreciated.
HEALTHFEST 2017
A great day was enjoyed by the TY students and teachers who attended the second year of the National Dairy Councils Health.
Fest in the RDS last Wednesday. The day started with some zumba and hip-hop dancing for all, followed by a range of competitive activities such as the hula hoop challenge where prizes of €20 one-for-all vouchers were won by James Byrne and Molly Hodgkinson. There were then varied talks by nutrionalists, a cookery demonstration by chef Adrian, a fitness talk from Operation Transformation’s Karl Henry and an excellent mental health talk by 2fm’s Eoghan McDermott.
READING INITIATIVE
A ‘Drop Everything and Read’ Initiative took place in schools throughout the country last Friday at midday. All our first Year students engaged in this initiative, reading the books they had borrowed from the School Library from 12.00 to 12.20. The DEAR Initiative always proves very popular with our students and underpins the school’s Literacy Strategy in a very positive way.
ROTARY LEADERSHIP
The Rotary Presentation Dinner will take place in the Grand Hotel on Monday, May 8, at 6 p.m. Congratulations to the following students who will attend this enjoyable and prestigious event: Matthew Nolan, fifth Year; Emma Cruise, fifth Year; Sophie Richardson, TY and Ronan Murray, fifth Year. Ronan will also be receiving a certificate on the night.
LUAN PARLE WORKSHOP
Well done to all the students that were involved last Monday in a music workshop focusing on melody, song writing and perfor- mance with renowned singer and songwriter, Luan Parle. The students composed a song entitled ‘Your Love Still Guides My Way’. The song was inspired by those who suffer from Alzheimer’s, heart attacks and strokes. The initiative was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated and really is another example of our students excelling once again. The students’ composition can be viewed on the school Facebook Page and on Twitter.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The first Year Girls’ Basketball team played against Avondale CC last Tuesday afternoon. The CCM girls were slow to start and Avondale reacted quickly to this and scored three baskets in a row. The CCM girls then got into the game and defended very well for the rest of the first quarter. Caoilfhionn Ni Dhubhslaine and Genevieve Codd White did very well in defence and stopped Avondale scoring several times.
Eva Dowling and Caroline Snell both did a great work at one-onone marking throughout the game. Shauna Kelly and Orla Kenny got more involved in the game and put pressure on the opponents’ defence, scoring a basket each. Eabha Mooney was a excellent ball carrier throughout the game. Avondale stayed ahead for the game but the CCM team were within three baskets before the fourth quarter.
The final quarter saw Claire Sammon and Ffia Driver work hard to stop Avondale scoring, however Avondale got on top again and won the game 36-22. Player of the match was Malwina Wesolowska. She carried the ball, defended well and was the top scorer for CCM.
This is the girls’ first year playing basketball. They are improving all the time since they played their first match in January and are looking forward to their next game. Thanks to Emma Cruise for being an excellent but very fair referee and to Zoe Byrne, Siobhán Irons and Conor Curran for doing the table and timing.
