A lot of wins for our teams this week – super performances from all!

Our under-13 boys had a great win in Division 1 beating Blessington by 8-13 to 1-7. Super all round team performance. Well done lads keep up the great work .

Well done to our under-12 girls who defeated Carnew on Tuesday night on a scoreline of 5-11 to 5-6. Great effort by all the girls. The girls also had a second outing this week and put in a brave performance against a superior Tinahely team. Keep up the good work girls.

Our under-11 boys had a great win on Wednesday night against An Tochar. Great play by all.

Well done to the under-10 girls on a great performance on Sunday morning and win over Eadestown in their first outing in the Kildare League. Well done to all the girls and their coaches and thanks to all the parents for the great support. Good luck to the girls in the rest of the league.

Our Senior men played two tough games at home this week. First up were Blessington on Tuesday evening. Baltinglass got off to a good start and were leading by 2-05 to 0-5 coming up to half time with the goals coming from Chris Heaslip and Sean O Brien, but conceded 1-01 to allow Blessington back into the game. Baltinglass got on top again in the second half and a second Sean O Brien goal helped to secure a 3-12 to 1-13 win. Scorers, Sean O Brien 2-01, Chris Heaslip 1-03, Mark Jackson 0-3, Adam McHugh, Henry Sinnott 0-2 and Jason Kennedy 0-1.

Next up on a wet and windy Saturday evening were Eire Og Greystones. This was not to be as high a scoring game, with both teams struggling to make an impact when playing against the wind.

Baltinglass had the wind in the first half and were leading at half time on a score of 0-6 to 0-0.

Eire Og got back into the game early in the second half with some good scores, but Baltinglass did well to hang on for their second win of the week on a score of 0-8 to 0-7.

Scorers Mark Jackson 0-4, Henry Sinnott 0-2, Sean O Brien and Adam McHugh 0-1. Next up are Blessington away on Friday evening at 8pm.

Well done to the Wicklow under-16 boys team that defeated Carlow on Saturday morning in the first round of the Carlow Cup in Dr Cullen Park on a score of 2-09 to 1-03. Baltinglass were represented by Alan Barrett, Sean Doody, Johnny Keogh and Jason Steed. Well done again, lads.

Hard luck to Sarah Jane Winder, Helena Dowling, Geraldine Norton and Sarah Fennelly who were on the Wicklow team against Wexford yesterday.

AGB

Last week was a busy week for the Juvenile section. On Monday evening four of the teams travelled for their matches.

The under-17 Minor team were in Blessington where they finished 3-09 to 1-12.

This is the under-17s last match until after their exams, and we wish the players good luck in their exams.

The under-15s team faced a tough Annacurra side and suffered defeat after a hard played match.

The under-13s travelled to Carnew where they had a great match and a strong win and finished 8-10 to 4-05.

The other under-13 team travelled to Newtown where they were put through their paces by a tough Newtown team, and suffered defeat.

On Wednesday evening the under-11 boys travelled to Eire Og with two teams. Both teams played well against Eire Ogs teams and the boys really enjoyed their games with huge progress to be seen from both teams.

The under-15s welcomed Blessington to Pearse’s Park and after a tough match where they really pushed themselves they were unfortunately defeated.

AGB’s Senior men welcomed Rathnew to Pearses Park on Friday evening. Although the evening was very warm, it did not hinder the AGB men’s spirit. From the first throw in the team got into positions and really got going.

Rathnew found it hard to break into the game as AGB were strong in all areas and rarely allowed too much ball be given their way.

A tough match was played out with great football on display from two very strong sides.

The fitness of AGB can clearly be seen as the ball travelled from one end if the pitch to the other. Goal scorers for AGB on the night were Cormac O’Shea(2), Philip Healy (2), Ciaran Hyland (1) and Shane McBride.

The final whistle blew and the score was AGB 6-12 to Rathnew 0-15.

The Senior men are out this Saturday at home again to Donard The Glen at 6pm.

The Junior ‘B’ men also host a home match this Thursday against Rathnew. Throw in is 7.30pm.

In ladies football, the Senior ladies travelled for a challenge match during the week, the ladies fixtures will resume following the completion of the exams. We wish the girls studying for their exams the best of luck.

The under-12 girls faced St.Pats at home on Tuesday evening and played a great match.

The under-10 girls travelled to Ballygarrett on Friday evening for a challenge match and a great display of football was to be seen by all the girls.

ENNISKERRY

Valleymount 2-16, Enniskerry 0-9 - A flattering but deserved win for the Lakesiders in glorious sunshine in Valleymount on Sunday morning. Enniskerry made the early running and surged into a 0-4 to 0-1 after 15 minutes but the locals responded to lead 0-9 to 0-4 at the break.

The second half became a tale of goal chances taken by the homesters and missed by the visitors and this was the difference in the end. Scores for Enniskerry were shared by Gavin Barton, Alan King, Rhys

Cope and Brendan Barton. Best on the day for a Black and Amber side who never gave up were Paul Kavanagh in goals, James Moloney, Dan Kelly, Gavin Barton and Alan King.

The girls made the short trip south to Eire Og, Greystones last Thursday evening. The heat, hard ground and tough Greystones side made sure the girls had to fight till the end to secure a win. The final score 4-11 to 3-10. An all-round strong performance from the team with the two Sophie’s, Lauren O’Sullivan, Jamie Curran and Paris Flynn having a great game.

Commiserations to Tara Dowling Costello and her Wicklow team mates in their loss to Wexford in the championship on Saturday afternoon.

Two great wins for our Juvenile teams last Wednesday evening. Our U11s had a fantastic 3-13 to 2-4 win over St. Pats Wicklow in Kilgarron, and the Clan na Gael U15s ground out an 0-8 to 0-3 win over Kilquade Gaels in Kilcoole. Well done to both teams!

ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES

Three Éire Óg hurlers played a part for Wicklow against Carlow in the semi-final of the Christy Ring Cup in Network Dr. Cullen Park on Saturday. Dual star Stephen ‘Chester’ Kelly (who captained the footballers against Louth in the Leinster Championship next day), and Peter Keane both of whom featured on the starting 15 at full-back and half-forward respectively while Anto Byrne was introduced approaching half-time to reduce the team’s physical deficit.

The Cill Mantáin followers were under no illusions as to their team’s chances of coming away with a victory. A comparison of the CVs of both teams would have revealed that Wicklow lagged well behind the hosts in both class and achievement and it is the nature of hurling that it allows class differences to be fully realised on the scoreboard. So outcomes, except when differences are marginal, follow closely the form book.

The seaside county’s fans’ pessimism was reinforced on hearing that Christy Moorehouse, captain and star performer, was unavailable because of injury.

It is an unfortunate phenomenon that at the moment there is a paucity of ‘big’men (fir móra) on both the county’s hurling and football panels and this had a part in its undoing in each of last weekend’s games.

It did not take long for Carlow to reveal that its reputation was no fake news; they dominated from the throw-in and demonstrated a worrying accuracy over a wide range of distances and angles. 13 minutes into the game Cill Mantáin were 0-6 to 0-1 behind and a heavy defeat seemed inevitable. A goal for Wicklow in one of their rare score-threatening excursions in the 1st half gave a deceptive respectability to the half-time score.

Thankfully the Garden county men returned to the fray with a renewed spirit and a determined frame of mind and began to show some of the form which had brought them to that stage of the competition. This was reflected in the fact that they were outscored by only a single point (0-9 to 1-5) in the 2nd period.

Éire Óg has an equal opportunity philosophy and promotes its sports of iomáint and peil even-handedly to both males and females. At present much work is being done at juvenile level to ensure that both camogie and peil na gcailíní will be set on solid foundations within the club.

Camogie up to u-14 is moving along nicely and among the fruits of its mentors’ labours was the inclusion of the 3 Éire Óg players, Gráinne, Siobhán and Aisling, in one of the two Wicklow u-14 teams which were involved in a recent inter-county blitz in Portlaoise.

U-12 The team’s management is to be complimented on its choice of strip for these girls which is seen to good effect on the club’s Facebook page. The squad has taken part in both blitzes and league games. To date the cailíní have played 2 games, against Donard and Kiltegan, in the league and have shown themselves not to be out of their depth against these well-established camogie clubs. Before the opening of the league the u-12s had played a very enjoyable and instructive game against Arklow Rocks, a club which also has a long history in the wielding of the camán.

The u-8 and u-10 interclub competitions are played according to the Go-Games format which places the emphasis on enjoyment over competitiveness and on team play over individual showboating. During the last month teams at these levels took part in 2 of these fun-filled blitzes: at home when they hosted Glenealy, Bré Emmets and Kilcoole and in Kilcoole when the same clubs plus Annacurra and St Pats took part.

PEIL fé 16: The Blessington u-16 girls paid their return Div.2 league-game visit to Na Clocha Liatha on Weds. evening last. The previous match had been a closely contested affair and our lassies had considered themselves lucky to have come away with a 2 point victory. The excitement of this game carried over to Weds’ encounter but on this occasion the visitors took home the spoils after a hugely dramatic last few minutes. A minute remains on the clock, Éire Óg has possession deep in Blessington territory and their supporters are counting out the anxiety-prolonged seconds to the final whistle. Disaster! The ball is turned over and is passed rapidly and uninterruptedly from Blessington player to Blessington player the length of the field to be finally delivered to the back of the Éire Óg net. The shock knocked our ladies completely off their guard and they allowed the kick-out ball to be collected cleanly by Blessington hands which had the immediate consequence of Éire Óg conceding another goal. The loss of Katie Lawless through injury close to the break when Éire Óg were beginning to get on top, nudged the scales in the opposition’s favour.

LOTTO..Nos. drawn on Monday 22nd were 12, 15, 22, 26. Pota Óir on Mon 29th was €6800.

NEWTOWN

Unfortunately due to the inclement weather last weekend our popular junior magpie’s nursery program was cancelled and because the coming weekend is a bank holiday we will have no nursery this coming Saturday. We hope to return on Saturday 10th June and every Saturday at 10am on the pitch, an hour’s fun and excitement is guaranteed each week for 4-8year olds. If you need more info please give Barry a buzz at 0868390507.

The U7 and U9s next blitz is scheduled for Friday June 9th in Bray. Both these teams are training on Tuesdays at 6-30pm.

The U13s maintained their 100% record with a hard fought win over a strong Arklow team. Newtown led all the way but it was 4 goals in the last few minutes that only finally made the win safe.

Newtown led by 9 at half time but Arklow had reduced the deficit to 3 points with 8 minutes to go and a couple of harsh decisions against Newtown gave Arklow a chance of an unlikely victory but again as in previous games they created and took goal chances at crucial times to secure the game.

In an entertaining game it was overall probably Newtown’s best performance so far this year in and the team on the night was

Shane Synnott, Marcel Kodajca, Luke Breen, Padraig Gammell, Martin Kelly, Adam Hussey, Shane Dunleavy, Jason Carthy, Charlie Sullivan, Bobby Dowling, Daragh Heffernan, Matthew Cooley, Ryan Clarke, Mason Melia, Adam Martin, Ryan McMahon The U8_10 girls are training on Wednesdays at 6.30pm.

The U12 girls are going well in the league and are playing st nicks at home next Tuesday. The U14 girls next game is against Bray Emmets and training is Mondays and Thursdays at 7pm.

The U16 girls played An Tochar during the week and had a great win, the girls are still unbeaten in the league, they are taking a break from matches until after the junior cert but training continues every Monday and Friday at 7pm. Best of luck to all sitting exams over the coming weeks.

If you need more info about any of our juvenile teams please give Shay a ring on 0872699620. All membership is now overdue and must be paid within the next 2 weeks when we will implement a strictly no pay no play policy.
