One of the best-loved songs about Liverpool, ‘Ferry Cross
The Mersey’ was first released by Gerry and the Pacemakers in late 1964. Gerry Marsden’s song was a hit both sides of the Atlantic, but peaked at number 8 in the UK charts in January, 1965. Almost a quarter of a century later, the song finally made it to No. 1, as a charity single released to help families affected by the Hillsborough Disaster of April 1989, the worst disaster in the UK’s sporting history when 96 Liverpool fans died in a crush at the Sheffield stadium during an FA Cup semi-final game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Joining Marsden on the new recording produced by Stock, Aitken and Waterman, were fellow Liverpudlians, Beatles legend Paul McCartney, Holly Johnson of Frankie Goes To Hollywood fame, and The Christians. Their version, which spent three weeks at the top of the UK charts, was also a No. 1 hit in Ireland.
