A good win for Kiltegan men

Hollywood fall on the road

- RICHARD CLUNE

KILTEGAN 1-09 HOLLYWOOD 1-07

KILTEGAN kicked 14 wides, dropped five shots short and hit the post with a free and yet still emerged with a victory against Hollywood in this league encounter on Sunday morning.

They kicked ten of those wides in the first half and only led by a point at half time, 4-3. They should have been out the gate by that stage, home and hosed with time to do the more important things in life such as eat ice-cream.

Instead, it was wide after wide after wide.

They totally outplayed Hollywood. The full-back line was very impressive, if they didn’t win the ball coming in they dispossessed their man more often than not. That said, their task was made a little easier when Tony Hannon departed the field after 21 minutes.

Around the middle third Kiltegan were comfortable but once they got sight of goal they were terrible. Sometimes the shot selection was poor and sometimes the shots were just downright poor. Maybe they have a master plan of getting everything to Seanie Furlong for the rest of the year and let him take the shots. Regardless, they can’t have such a poor conversion rate and hope to win too much.

Hollywood, meanwhile, don’t look great and unless this is just a once off they don’t look like they’ll return to Senior championship anytime soon. They mixed the good, it’s a pity Hannon had to go off so early, with the bad, there were some Junior C standard passes, while being second best at all other times.

Kiltegan started as they meant to go on, with a wide after a few seconds, and then dropped a shot short off the cross bar. Down the other end Hannon had no such trouble, winning the first ball that came into him and kicking the opening score.

The sides traded a wide each while Kiltegan dropped another shot short before the Hollywood defence were caught asleep, letting Kiltegan take a short 45 and Rory Finn level the match. Anthony Furlong quickly gave Kiltegan the lead from 30 metres.

It would take them another nine minutes to score again, during which time they kicked four wides and Rory Finn’s free clattered off the post when he should have converted. Furlong eventually raised a white flag.

Kiltegan had time for another two wides before Hollywood levelled the match at three points apiece coming towards half time, Thomas Burke with the honours. Out of nowhere Hollywood were in this match.

Kiltegan had more four more chances however to regain the lead but they could only take one while kicking two wides and dropping their third shot short.

Hollywood started the second half well, but it was their time to be off target, kicking two wides in succession. Kiltegan on the other hand must have found their shooting boots at half time, reeling off four in a row to take control of the match, Bryan Cullen popping up with two of them.

Padraig O’Toole appeared to seal the deal for Kiltegan with a goal in the 48th minute and his team led by 1-09 to 4 points.

Hollywood did well to finish within two, Colin Tutty wrestled Blaine Harmon off the ball to volley it into the net and with only moments left John Teahan Burke forced goalkeeper Fergal Harmon to tip his bullet over the bar.

It was all too little too late however and Kiltegan left with a rather unconvincing win.
