LUKE O’ TOOLE’S

What a weekend the under-14 hurlers of Luke O Toole’s had.

They went to Wexford to take part in the AllIreland Feile and although they returned home without any silverware they did themselves, their family and their club proud.

With a very, very young team, the coaching team of Kieran O’ Shea, John Byrne and Pete Carroll, worked wonders to prepare the team for the competition. No stone was left unturned in the preparation.

The players themselves collected the largest percentage of the funds required to participate, and with further funding coming from a coffee morning fundraiser and the very kind sponsorship of local business the team were set.

Playing against St Mary’s of Rosslare and Wolfe Tones of Longford on the Friday evening, it certainly looked like the occasion got to the players as they failed to reach any sort of form and went down 2-04 to 1-02 and 2-03 to 1-00 respectively, while at the same time their wonderful hosts Kilmore were successful, winning their two games 0-04 to 0-02 and 3-07 to 1-03 respectively.

On Saturday morning the players showed their true potential and were very unluckly to draw with Kilmore at 1-04 to 2-01, with the Kilmore goal coming with the last puck of the game and deep in to injury time.

Nevertheless, it looked like Luke O’Toole’s had arrived at the Féile a day late.

Into the Shield quarter-final then and they played Carlow Town Hurling Club and even without their star player, Dylan Byrne, they played out of their skins and came away with a deserved victory on 3-04 to 2-02.

On Sunday morning, the boys were up and leaving Kilmore at 7.30am to play Kilveagh of Armagh at 10.00am in Carlow in the All-Ireland Shield semi-final and although getting of to a dream start and fighting all the way to the end, they came up short on a score of 4-02 to 2-02 to bow out of the competition.

Great credit to the players and mentors for giving us all another Féile weekend to remember for the rest of our lives, and a big shout out to our magnificent hosts Kilmore who looked after us second to none.

The 21 players that took part in the 2017 Féile were: Daragh Hayden, Oisin Keegan, Kevin Murray, Patrick Fay, Ned Williams, Shane Arthur, Sam Carroll, Callum Mutton, Larry Kinsella, Steven O’ Toole, Mark Shannon, Joe McClean, Hugh Gunning, Philip Toomey, Dermot Toomey, Lorcan Toomey, Dylan Byrne, Ciaran Lambert, Boris Ivanoff, Alex Kavanagh, Rory O’Dare.

LARAGH

Last Tuesday we travelled to play Kilcoole in Division 2. After three great wins in a row we were looking to make it four and that we did.

We started the game very well with some very good scores.

As always there’s never much between both teams and that’s the way it went throughout the game.

We went in at half-time winning 0-10 to 0-08. We went four points up in the last few minutes of the second half but Kilcoole as always keep coming back at us and they scored 1-03 without reply. But we kept putting the pressure on and added three points on the run.

Then the killer score came after some great play when the ball ended up with Steve Olohan who buried it to the back of the net.

This put us back in front. We added one more point to win by two points. Final score: 1-16 to 1-14.

This was a great team performance with some excellent scores taken by both teams.

Team on the day: Aran Lynham, Ross Doonan, Peter Merrigan, Ciaran Byrne, Craig McCoy, Gary Cullen, Jamie Cullen, Davie McDonald, John Nolan, Jack Dunne, Steve Olohan, Myles Conway, Dan Power, Mark Miley, and Keith Lawlor. Subs: Eamonn Kennedy, Stephen Curley, Andy Kenny.

Once again it was great to see all the support in Kilcoole. Next up is Kilcoole again in the championship this Saturday at 6pm in Ashford. All support welcome.

No action last weekend after An Tochar decided not to show up for 13-a-side competition, but it’s full steam ahead this weekend with tough championship opener Friday evening in Arklow against a flying Kilmac outfit.

With a few out through injury and others suspended it will need all shoulders to the wheel. Support appreciated.

Hard luck to Mark, Paddy and Padraig last weekend against Laois. Tough to be so near yet so far but great for a small little club like ourselves having three on the field of play at the final whistle and all contributing.

There was no lotto jackpot winner last weekend. The numbers drawn were 4, 9, 23, and 28 with Mick Lynch and the Tyrrell kids the only match three winners.

Finally, the final amount raised for Down Syndrome Ireland and The Martin Family from our recent Family Fun Day was an incredible €3,780. Well done and thanks to all who contributed.

ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES

The blitz to select the clubs to represent Cill Mhantáin at the All-Ireland (eventhough there will be teams from abroad, New York, Britain etc. taking part) Féile (faoi14) took place over two days on the last week-end of April.

A preliminary round blitz was run off on the first day and the three top teams, Baltinglass, St. Nicholas and Éire Óg qualified to participate in the next day’s round-robin which was to decide on the two teams to go to the national Féile. For the 2nd year running Éire Óg filled the top spot.

This year’s All-Ireland Féile which takes place over next week-end is being hosted by three Ulster counties.

The Éire Óg lads will be guests of families in the area surrounding a rural village in Monaghan. Guímid gach dea-ghuí to the squad and its mentors, Maurice Prendergast, Peter O’Neill and Tadhg Shanahan for their excursion and we are sure that the players will impress both on and off the field.

Such occasions do not arise too often in a lifetime so bainigí taitneamh as an deire seachtaine, a bhuachaillí.

Comhgáirdeachas to James Leonard and to Conor Monaghan, and of course to their wives, who recently celebrated the arrival of leanaí.

In the bad old days – how could they be otherwise for aren’t we told by the cognoscenti of the present times that they were all bad!– the question asked of parents on such occasions would today have the feminists and the p.c. brigade pulling out their hair and phoning Joe Duffy viz. was it a boy or a child?

Well, in the case of James it was a boy, Ronan, whereas for Conor it was a girl, Freya. Beannacht Dé ar na leanaí agus go raibh saol fada slántúil acu and may they be of little trouble to their parents.

Recently our under-13 hurlers travelled to Aughrim to take on Luke O’Tooles. The evening, before the warm spell, was not exactly ideal for iomáint and it is to the credit of both teams that they served up quite an entertaining game with its fair share of skilful play.

Éire Óg drew first blood when Kevin Booth took advantage of indecision in O’Toole’s defence to guide the sliothar over the goal-line.

This was followed shortly afterwards by a point from Oisín Shanahan.

Unfortunately after that the sea-siders scoring dried up until just before the half-time whistle when Chase Scully shot an excellent point. Meanwhile O’Tooles had built up a score of 2-01.

Not long after the resumption Éire Óg’s position deteriorated further when the opposition added another goal.

The locals added two unanswered points which left the score with 12 minutes to go at 2-5 to 1-2.

At this stage a real sense of urgency entered the Éire Óg play and from that to the end they held the opposition scoreless and had their goals under constant siege.

Greystones lost by a single point. Inaccuracy was Éire Óg’s downfall!

COOLBOY

ST. NICHOLAS GAA

Best of luck to the under-14s heading to Kingscourt, Co. Cavan ,for the Féile this weekend. All the preparations are in place and the lads are rearing to go. Thank you to all the sponsors who have been very generous especially to Dublin Products the main sponsor. We wish all the boys and management good luck. Have a great weekend.

Well done to the under-13s on their well-deserved victory last week when they travelled to Rathnew to take on the Village in their home grounds in Division 1.

The St. Nicks lads did extremely well against a very tough, speedy and skilled Rathnew side. They had to dig deep in the first half to stay in touch as Rathnew popped over the points. Goals in the first half from Ben Kearney and Eoin Deering set them up with some super points taken by Adam Byrne.

They backs did well to quell the Rathnew attack and at half time it stood at St. Nicks 3-1 to Rathnew 0-8.

St. Nicks got off to a great start in the second half with goals from Eoin Deering and Cian Deering to keep the team afloat.

The lads did fantastic in every position of the field, and as always were well disciplined and very supportive of one another. Well done to mid field and the backs who did a super job.

Final score St. Nicks 2-14 to Rathnew 5-7. It’s great to see the positive encouragement attitude in action and the lads can be proud of themselves on how well they represent their club.

If you have club related notes, match reports, score-lines etc to include in our newsletter please forward info to pro.dunlavin.wicklow@gaa.ie before 9pm on Sunday.

KNOCKANANNA

No winner of this week’s lotto jackpot of €3,600. Numbers drawn were 11, 13, 21, and 25.

Three match threes: Paul Dollard ,Jim Keogh, Declan Whelan each receive €35.

Sellers prize was Sarah O’Keeffe, €20. Next week’s jackpot stands at €3,700.

Knockananna had an excellent win over Newcastle in the league Last Wednesday in Knockananna.

With several players out through injury we had just a panel of 16 to choose from which made the victory even more impressive.

Newcastle were reduced to 114 men after 15 minutes and this aided our cause. Keith Corrigan got on the end of great ball from Lorcan Tyrrell to drill the ball to the net leaving the score 1-05 to two points at half-time. The second half Knockananna were in control for the most part and added another eight points to the score line.

Well done to Dylan Tracey who came on in the second half and immediately got stuck into the game dispossessing the Newcastle backs on four occasions resulting in two points .

The championship starts July 8 in Arklow against Kilcoole.

Congratulations and commiserations to Knockananna Féile girls . They reached the Féile final in Kilkenny but lost to Windgap. Really and truly it was a case of boxing above their weight as the majority of the team are 12 years of age while all their opponents were bigger stronger and older.

Well done to Tom Byrne and Lisa Mc Donald and everyone associated with these terrific bunch of girls. The defeat didn’t dampen their spirits as they sang and danced well into the night in Knockananna.

Unfortunately they couldn’t defeat the cursed midgets who halted proceedings with a vicious assault about 11pm.
