Bowl dream ends abruptly

-

WATERFORD 2

WDSL 0

THE dream came crashing down to earth and hopes were crushed when a dubious penalty decision was awarded to Waterford making an already mammoth task almost impossible.

Five minutes into the game the referee decided that Eoin Doyle’s shoulder pass to be a hand ball, the resulting penalty was saved by Andrew Nolan only to see the rebound smashed into the net putting Waterford a goal ahead, Waterford were proving to be a very strong outfit having run the DDSL close for top spot in their group.

WDSL to their credit remained undaunted stuck to their guns playing the same football which won them many admirers here in Limerick.

Waterford were a very physical and incredible fast team pressing every ball and attacking at speed every opportunity they had. As the game progressed Waterford became more and more frustrated as the WDSL grew in confidence and had chances of the own with Ross Quinn, Eoin Doyle and Conor Clinton all going close.

But with ten minutes remaining Waterford delivered the killer blow scoring the second goal again coming from a dubious refereeing decision when Waterford were awarded a free kick which they swept the ball across field to the left from which the left back swung a diagonal into the box, the ball was met by Waterford‘s tricky winger dragging the ball past the oncoming centre half and putting the ball past the oncoming keeper into the net for their second.

WDSL have been a thorn in a few team’s side in Limerick and have confounded many of the experts with their performances. This team were decimated last summer as a 24-man squad was reduced to seven as seventeen left to go to Dublin leaving the coaching eight months to prepare a squad. It is to their tremendous credit that they have performed so well improving WDSL standing and anything they have achieved in many a year.

The matched ended two nil but it has massively under stated the WDSL accomplishment.
