Competition begins to take its toll

WDSL 1

LIMERICK DISTRICT 5

DAY four and the competition was beginning to take its toll, with the penalty in the fifth minute that ultimately sealed a defeat to Waterford. The team had to regroup for the play off places and a match against Limerick Dist. With the injury list mounting and insuring every player got game time trying to piece together a team was proving to be more difficult than was first imagined.

As WDSL took to the pitch with all the players giving everything they could it proved a bridge too far, Limerick got off to a flying start with two goals within minutes, it was just an indication of what was to come. Between injuries and players playing out of position Limerick added to their lead.

WSDL were now beginning to feel the full impact of the physical demand of this competition. It was only three weeks previous the WDSL had four players carrying injury and two weeks before that the number was even greater at seven. Together with a club games schedule that prevented the coaching staff putting a serious fitness programme into practice with players coming to county training directly from club fixtures, making it an almost impossible task.

Limerick added another before the half with score now four nil. Once again the bravery of the WDSL players showed as players on the verge on exhaustion stepped up to be put into the game to try salvage some pride from the game.

The second half proved to be a much tighter affair with the WDSL once again proved to be a difficult unit to break down. Wicklow did get one back but Limerick replied with another goal.

And despite this result the team refused to lay down and allow the opposition to roll over them.
