GAA CLUB NEWS

Round two of the senior championship takes place this Sunday the 30th in Pearse Park Arklow at 12.30. Best of the luck to all the lads, Johnny and his management team as they take on Annacurra. In what will be a tight game a good crowd can make all the difference so please come along and cheer the lads on.

Over recent weeks we have enjoyed glorious sunshine at our popular junior magpie’s nursery which takes place every Saturday at 10 a.m. on the pitch, the nursery is for kids aged 4-8 and great fun is had by all every week. All are welcome to join at any stage throughout the season.

The under-7 and under-9s had their last home blitz of the year last week, with two blitzes left to finish out the season in Greystones and Ballinakill. Thanks to all who helped out especially the young whistlers – Lee, Aisling and Luke. Both of these teams are training on Tuesdays at 6.30 p.m.

The under-11s were back in action last week and train on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

The under-13s are doing well in the league and had another good win over Clara Gaels last week; they train on Mondays at 6.30 p.m.

The under-eight_10 girls train Wednesdays at 6.30 p.m. The under-12 girls are away to Baltinglass next Monday for the first match of the championship.

The under-14 girls are due to play AGB in the championship next week however there is no date confirmed as yet, training is Mondays and Thursdays at 7 p.m.

The under-16 girls clinched the league during the week with a win over Valleymount; the girls had been playing brilliant football earlier in the season but hit a sticky patch the last few weeks. Training has been stepped up and we really need everybody to attend all sessions. Well done to Philly, Aisling, Niamh, Nicola and all the girl’s and best of luck in the championship which starts shortly.

No winner of the lotto last week but there was however eight lucky match-three winners who won €25 each.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

At the recent AGM of the WDSL it was decided courtesy of a vote to move the WDSL season to a calendar season. This means a year ahead of a directive from the FAI that the WDSL will have a ‘short season’ followed by a ‘long season’. The ‘short season’ will start beginning of September 2017 and finish the end of November 2017.

The new season or long season will commence end of Feb/ beg. of March 2018 and will finish in November 2018. There will be breaks during the course of the season to facilitate state exams etc. We will post further details as we get them.

Also in another initiative and also due to the amount of girls playing throughout the WDSL the league are looking at setting a girl’s league at under-12 and under-14 and if this venture proves successful the league will look to extend it to all age groups. The proposal is to run the girls’ football every two weeks and all players can double up on their mixed team within their club.

Also, the feedback on the twin game format at under-eight/9’s is to revert to the game set up like the under-10/11 age groups. So it is proposed to run under-eights/under-nine/10/11s as a seven a-side game with R/On R/Off subs on a weekly basis (SINGLE GAME) while on set weekends (every third weekend) in a venue set by the league, they will run a blitz, where all teams turn up and play Twin Games as per PDP, more to follow on this. As we get more information we will post it here.

Some of our teams will be back in training at the beginning of August and we will keep you all up to date with all developments.

We have two players celebrating a birthday this coming week and they are Frank Lang from the under-11s and Bogdan Rusu from the under-13s. Happy birthday guys from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.
