Wicklow clubs do county proud at major event
ARKLOW TOWN claimed success in the Plate of the hugely competitive Volkswagen Junior Masters football tournament last week.
The Bridgewater Centre Park outfit were joined from Wicklow by teams from Greystones AFC, who lost out in the Shield final, and Wicklow Rovers with all players learning from the experience.
Over 250 footballers from 16 top teams around Ireland competed in Dublin’s A.U.L Complex over the weekend in this year’s popular tournament.
A fiercely competitive final saw Belvedere FC defeat Crumlin Utd 1-0 in the final. Greystones Utd were defeated in the Shield final, while Arklow Town came out vic- torious in the Plate final.
Now in its fourth year, the under 13 boy’s tournament has grown significantly in terms of its recognition and importance amongst the Irish grassroots soccer community. The stakes were high with the winning team, Belvedere FC benefitting with a €2,500 grant from Volkswagen for their club, while all competing teams received an Umbro team kit for the competition.
From sixteen teams participating in this year’s 11-a-side tournament, the winners were;
