GAA CLUB NOTES

The seniors were scheduled to take on Bray Emmets in the Keating Cup last night Tuesday the 19th.

The under-12 girls finished off their season last Sunday when they were narrowly defeated in the A shield final by a good St Pat’s team, the girls battled on bravely and left everything on the pitch but a couple of goals just after halftime meant we were always playing catch-up. In the end we just ran out of time but nevertheless this team still had a great year having already won the div two league. Well done on a great season to the girls and management of Owen, Ned, Loretto and Lorna. Well done also to Tia McDonald, Anatasia Razniak, Katelyn O’Toole, Hannah Martin, Katie Smith and Alicia Farrell, who all represented the club and played their part in a Leinster blitz last Saturday.

The under-16 girls are still awaiting a date for their A shield final while the under-14 girls are also waiting for a date for their league play-off final. The under-11 final for last Saturday didn’t take place and hopefully will be re-fixed for this weekend.

The under-13s started their championship group with a hard earned win over St Hugh’s in Newtown. Newtown led by 3-5 to 1-2 at half time after playing with a strong breeze and knew they would have a battle to hold this lead against the wind in the second half against a good St Hugh’s side. A crucial Newtown goal just after the lead was cut to a point with 10 minutes to go along with some spirited defending in the last few minutes enabled us to hold out for the win on a score of 4-6 to 3-6. We are awaiting their next championship fixture, and training is on Mondays at 6.30. We have a bus organised for the ladies all-Ireland final next Sunday, for more info give Shay a ring at 087 2699620.

There is a good stock of club gear now available to buy for any enquiries regarding club gear please contact Amy at 086 3332195.

Well done to Jim O’Riordan, Johnny Murphy and Barry McGuirl who won the all-Ireland football tickets. 9 people matched three numbers in the lotto last week but no one won the jackpot of €6200; numbers drawn were 2, 3, 8 and 25. Keep up to date on all that’s happening by following us on Facebook or Twitter at Newtown GAA.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Plenty of football for everyone last weekend. The under-8s played Glencormac Utd again last weekend and yet again the games were full of action and a goal or two was scored. Among the players who starred for the 8’s were Kayla Hamilton, David McCormack, Calem O’Brien and Bobby Spillane. Our under-9s hosted Wolfe Tone in an equally contested series of games where among those who starred were Oisin Duffy, Alex Ryan, Jack Barlow and Lucas Dowdall.

The under-10s also played Wolfe Tone at home and came away with an excellent victory that was full of goals from both sides. William Valentine and Max Roche both scored hat tricks, Pat Carey scored two, and there were singles from Luke Turley, Frank Lang and Ryan Collins. On the day Nichita Neaga and David Mackey were among the players who starred.

The under-11s played out a cracking 4-all draw at home to Arklow Town White in a game where they started slowly and went 2-0 down, fought back to go in front 4-2 thanks to goals from Matthew Doyle (2), Cormac Chance and Dylan Dunleavy but Arklow scored two late goals to take a share of the spoils. On the day Evan Fahey, Scott McKenna and Jack Daly starred for the team.

The 12’s were idle but the under-14s hosted a very strong Rathnew team and went down to defeat. In this game they had a poor start and finish but enjoyed a decent middle part of the game where Bobby Dowling and Charlie Sullivan were on the scoresheet for Newtown. On the day a lot of players didn’t perform anywhere near their capabilities.

The following are the fixtures for the weekending Sat/Sunday, September 23/24: under-8s at home to St Anthony’s Green KO Saturday to be confirmed; under-9s away to Greystones B KO to be confirmed; under-10s away to Wicklow Rovers Blue KO to be confirmed; under-11s away to Ashford Rovers Yellow KO to be confirmed; under-12s at home to Arklow United KO Saturday to be confirmed; under-14s at home to Arklow Town A KO Sunday at 10.30 a.m.; under-16s – Fixture to be confirmed (Fixtures and KO Times are subject to change)

One of our ever-popular fundraisers the ‘Last Man Standing’ competition will start back on the weekend of Saturday the 14th – Monday, October 16. The cost to play is €10 per player and the club pays out 50% of all money we take in. All money collected go to the continued development of the youngsters in the club. Please support.

The WDSL in conjunction with all the clubs in the league are running a fundraiser ‘The Kube’ on Saturday, November 18, in the Parkview Hotel in Newtown. It is hoped every club will enter at least one participant to take on the Kube. The entry fee is €300 per participant which each club must pay themselves or get sponsored. Sponsored cards are available at present through any committee member. As yet the club haven’t decided who will take on the Kube on behalf of the club but we have a couple of interested parties. Anything over €300 raised on the sponsor cards goes to the club and our participant/s stands to win up to €1,500 for the club depending on how she or he does. Further information in the coming weeks.
