Amazons show true grit with win over Wexford Wanderers

-

ARKLOW AMAZONS WEXFORD 13 10

A bright sunny Sunday afternoon at The Oval saw The Amazons get their league campaign off to the start they wanted with a win over neighbours Wexford Wanderers.

Arklow received the ball from the kick off and a great line break from Claire Nicholson with support from Dianne Hunt Byrne saw Dianne over the line for the first try of the day within the first two minutes of play.

Arklow had set down a marker for how they wanted the match to go and made sure Wexford knew The Amazons were here for their first win on the new pitch.

A series of good ball carrying and excellent defensive play, given Arklow were down to 14, kept Wexford off the score board in the first half.

The second half began with Wexford getting out of the blocks early and a try was scored almost immediately. Wexford were not about to let Arklow have it all their way and a second Wexford try came after a great steal and some poor Arklow tackling.

The home team were now trailing 5-10 but in true Amazon style the battle was not over and prop Lauren Messit crossed the line for Arklow’s second try.

The Amazons were determined to get a win in their first league game and eventually their persistence paid off with a penalty comfortably slotted over the posts by vice captain Kiri McLoughlin.

This was the final play of the day and the game finished with a 13-10 win for the Amazons.

An excellent game of rugby was played by both teams in good sporting fashion.

The Amazons play their next game away to Greystones next Sunday.
