Carnew reach final

Don Hyland to the fore as Carnew see off the Rocks

CARNEW EMMET S ARKLOW ROCKS 1-19 0-08

THE final scoreline in this Intermediate hurling semi-final played at Pearse’s Park, Arklow on Saturday evening last was a fair reflection of the level of dominance that the Wexford border side enjoyed over their Arklow opponents.

Wily old campaigner Don Hyland had a big influence over the outcome of the game.

Wearing the number 14 jersey, Don operated in a roving capacity, picking up ball all over the field.

He invariably sprayed out little passes and flicks to his colleagues and seldom allowed himself into a tackle.

In addition he pointed five frees and one 65 plus three points from play.

Contrast this with ARP’s inability to convert many of their scorable frees. They could have been six points closer at the finish had they been able to put their frees on the scoreboard.

Ian Clancy got Carnew off to a quick start with a point in the first minute.

Midfielder Dara Foley added another almost immediately. Foley went on to play a very influential role, getting on to a lot of ball right through the game.

Paddy Mellon and Conor Doyle had the Rocks level by the fourth minute. Carnew now took over and ARP were not to score again until the 29th minute.

In between a succession of points from Don Hyland, Cormac Doyle, Ian Clancy, Billy Rickerby and Dara Foley added to a fourteenth minute goal by Clancy meant that the Emmets were ahead by 1-11 to 0-2 coming up to the break.

Two quick points from Tiernan Mellon and another from TJ Byrne put a slightly more respectable look of 1-11 to 0-5 on the scoreboard.

Arklow Rocks began the second period in a promising fashion, Tiernan Mellon pointed after two minutes, followed by a great point from a marrow angle by substitute Chris Kavanagh.

However, two points from frees by Don Hyland and a great score from play by Cormac Doyle helped to get Carnew back on top again by the tenth minute.

The game continued in this mould for the remainder of the half with TJ Byrne contributing the only other ARP point of the half when he converted a 65 after twenty minutes.

Further points from Hyland, Cormac Doyle, Foley and Clancy meant that Carnew ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 1-19 to 0-8.

One interesting feature of the game was the performance of Keith Barnes and Ted Kennedy the opposing goalkeepers.

Both have lost little of their shot stopping ability with the result that only one green flag was raised throughout the game.
