NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Our under-8s played in the WDSL Fives Blitz in Ferndale Park in Arklow last Saturday morning and all present enjoyed their football and had loads of fun. The 9’s game away to Glencormac was called off.

The under-10s hosted near neighbours St Anthony’s and after racing into a three goal lead the away side hit back to score four without reply Newtown awoke from their slumber to notch three goals to take the game 6-4. On the day among those who starred for Newtown were Sebastian Anton, Max Roche and Aaron Roy. The goals came courtesy of William Valentine (2), Pat Carey, Max Roche, Aidan Heffernan and Ryan Collins. Mention must also go to the Anto’s two keepers who both pulled off some stunning saves on the day.

A late equaliser from Avonmore denied our 11’s victory away from home as both sides settled for a 3-3 draw. Newtown’s goals came from Cathal O’Toole, Jack Daly and Cormac Chance.

Our under-12s suffered another defeat, this time to table toppers Enniskerry on a 1-5 scoreline. Yet again despite a big effort the away side punished every mistake the team made. Max Synnott did strike late on with a fine finish for a consolation for Newtown. On the day among those who starred were Jack Coughlan, Patrick Martin and Eoghan Fox.

Despite a much-improved display on the last time the two teams met, our 14’s still lost 7-2 away to an excellent Rathnew team. Charlie Gregory and Martin Kelly scored the Newtown goals.

MENS SHED

It’s moving along nicely towards Christmas and the wee ones who have been good will be expecting something of an award for their efforts, so what better to give something even the passers by can enjoy and admire why not a ‘Fairy House’. Newtown and Newcastle Men’s Shed do a great line in all types, from the luxury to the ordinary, why not get that order in now and make your wee one happy, just post a message on our popular Facebook page, or drop by the shed any day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. And enjoy a cuppa while picking out your Fairy House, you never who you might bump into (we know from October onward, that great man himself, Santa drops by to make arrangements for his Christmas visits to our community).

We welcome two shedders from Wicklow Town, who join our lads in our shed band on Thursday nights and have made a great addition to the music played there.

Our shed was nominated for a community award in the ‘Heart of the community’ category but failed were unsuccessful this time, but were very pleased to be at least recognised for our work within the community and for that we say a big thanks.

A big thank you also to the Irish Heart Foundation for their visit to our shed on Thursday last for our ‘Health Check’ orgainised through the HSE and the association of Men’s Sheds, we also welcomed a number of shedders from around Co Wicklow to take part.

Every now and then, when all those dreaded bills are paid, and some put on the long finger, we at the shed in Killadreenan put our hands down the back of our sofa, and have a good oul root for a penny or two to give other unfortunates who might be having some difficulty in making ends meet, now and again it bears some fruit, but more often it comes up empty, this time we got lucky, and the beneficiaries we chose were Irish Guide Dogs (Autism branch) and My Ca9 Companion, very deserving of a few bob of any one’s money.

Finally we hope to start machine training in October for members who wish to make use of certain machines in the workshop, only members who attend will be allowed to use these machines, so remember to enroll for training.

Weekly breakfasts continue on Wednesday mornings from 10.30 to 11.30, so if youre passing please drop by for an oul chin wag.
