BOYS’ FOOTBALL

Under-14 SOUTH LEINSTER BOYS’ GAELIC – CCM Wicklow 0-7 Carnew 0-8: CCM travelled to play Carnew on Friday, October 13, on our first day out in this competition. We played against a strong wind in the first half and went in at half time trailing by six points to four. All over the field, the lads were putting in a fantastic effort with continuous disciplined tackling and fantastic interplay in order to counteract the wind.

In the second half, the lads settled to their task very well and scored two points without reply. In the next 10 minutes neither team scored but CCM were reduced to 13 players. CCM dug in and pushed up with a levelling score. This was followed up by the lead point scored by the very energetic and dynamic Toby Lee Curran. However, the sheer weight of numbers could not hold Carnew and they finished stronger, scoring two points with their last two attacks to win the game by one point. We play our next game this week against Gorey CC in CCM.

GIRLS’ CAMOGIE

The CCA Girls’ Senior camogie will be competing against St Kevin’s Community College in the Senior B Championship semi-final. The match will take place in the Kilcoole GGA grounds on Monday, October 23, at 10.30 a.m. The team hopes they can overcome this strong St Kevin’s side, who they narrowly lost to in last year’s competition. Best of luck to all the girls.

BOYS’ SOCCER

The CCA under-19 Boy’s soccer team played out a very exciting match against Presentation College Bray in the Wicklow/Wexford under-19 League in Greystones on October 6 CCA found themselves down by two goals early in the game, but bravely came back to equalise with two fine goals from Ryan Burke and Shane Keenan in the second half. All was level till very late in the game when an experienced Presentation side caught CCA with a few late goals. Manager Mr Hughes said he was proud of the dogged effort the team put in and hopes that they can learn from the positives when they face CCM on Monday the 23rd. Final result: Presentation College Bray six CCA two.

BOY’S BASKETBALL

Two games took place in Coláiste Chraobh Abhann last Friday the 13th, where the CCA under-16s and under-19s team played two excellent Arklow CBS teams. The date in question was indeed to be a bad omen for CCA the under-19s team were well beaten by an exceptional Arklow team, who convincingly won by a margin of 54 points to 18. Coach Mr Craig stated that the team did very well, but faced a team that he believes will go on to win the tournament outright. The under-16s match was a much closer affair, narrowly going down by 34 points to 38. Jason Gallagher and Markas and Isajevas were the stand out players for CCA.

TY WORK EXPERIENCE

Our TY students spent last week gaining knowledge and experience in the work place with their first Transition Year work placement of the year. The school would like to thank all the local business, schools and companies who very kindly took our students on and offered them the opportunity to advance their skills and knowledge. The students gained some great insight into the world of work and we hope they will use the training to help guide them in an area they wish to advance in their future career.

GUEST SPEAKER 6THN

Prison officer Cormac Timmons visited 6THN in preparation for their visit to Mountjoy Prison on Thursday, October 26. 5KRE will accompany the class on the visit. He spoke to the students about the life of the prison officer and the prisoners in Mountjoy Prison. It was an extremely informative and engaging experience for all of the students.

121 TY PROGRAMME

121 is a programme that seeks to foster links between the school and the local community. Transition Year students volunteer to act as a Tutor to ‘Learners’ from our community. (Learners tend to be senior citizens but an eclectic spread of our community, from housewives, nuns, local Men’s Shed members and those seeking some IT training for job prospects)

The TY students tutors the learners in how to use their digital devices. The lessons take place for six weeks at a time. We currently have 17 learners in G11 on a Thursday with 19 TY volunteers.

The focus of the lessons is on learning, but an important aspect of the project is to build up relationships and friendships between the learners and the tutors. It is an opportunity to open the doors of CCA to the wider school community. We will be recruiting new learners again in the New Year.

TY TRIP TO GO QUEST

The TY students attended a fun day of adventure on Monday, October 9, when they competed in the Go Quest challenge zone in the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland. GoQuest is a multi challenge arena with 28 different challenge rooms that are designed for adults, teenagers and children. Each team must compete the challenge before the clock runs out, with both the physical and mental capabilities of each participant being put to the test. There are varying degrees of difficulty so there is something for everyone. Mr Kennedy was delighted to report that despite the best efforts of the student teams participating, it was the teacher team that came out victorious in the end.

FRENCH DEBATE

Best of luck to Cormac Gilnagh (Captain), Róisín Connaughton, Marc Brady and Rachel Crimes, who shall be debating against Wesley College Dublin next Thursday evening in Alliance Française. Ms O’Brien says the team is well prepared and looking forward to the evening. The motion of the debate is ‘Zoos should be banned’ and the CCA team will be supporting the motion. Bonne chance à tous.
