Phyllis ‘honoured’ to be recipient of the Ann McLoughlin Role of Honour

-

PHYLLIS Farrell, PRO for Wicklow Community Games, was the 2017 recipient of the role of honour in memory of Ann McLoughlin.

Ann tragically passed away after a traffic accident on January 4 1992. She had led an action-packed sporting life and was an outstanding athlete who consistently won gold medals in the Community Games, both at local and national level.

She captained the Lakeside Girls Soccer Team to their first All-Ireland at Mosney in 1982. After representing Leinster on numerous occasions at the Inter Provincial Tournament each year in soccer, she was also capped several times at Under-18 level internationally for Ireland. She scored a hat-trick against Northern Ireland in 1986 and was presented with the match ball singed by all the players. Thereafter she won 20 senior caps, her most memorable coming against Sweden in Dalymount Park where she scored the equalizer on her 20th birthday.

In Ann’s memory her parents, Tony and Bridget McLoughlin, presented Wicklow Community Games with a Role of Honour Book which is presented each year at the Track and Field Finals in Shillelagh to a volunteer who has provided a lifetime of dedication to the Community Games in Wicklow.

2017 is the 25th year for the Role of Honour so it was decided to make a special presentation to Ann’s parents at the Lakeside Community Games awards night.

Phyllis Farrell was included as the 2017 Role of Honour.

‘I am honoured to receive this award. When I started out in the Community Games I worked on the County Board with Tony so this honour is very special to me.’ A number of people were arrested in Arklow Friday as part of the Garda Operation Thor. According to the An Garda Síochána Twitter account a car was seized on Friday afternoon after officers stopped the vehicle and detected a number of foil-lined bags and stolen goods. The occupants of the car were arrested and a court appearance is expected to follow.
