Glendalough Distillery win two awards
GLENDALOUGH Distillery were the big winners on the night of the Irish Whiskey Awards held at Old James Distillery, Bow Street, Dublin.
The awards, which are now in their fifth year, were judged in blind tasting sessions by members of the Celtic Whiskey Club, the Irish Whiskey Society Whiskey and the Cork Whiskey Society judged the whiskey categories.
Overseas members of the Celtic Whiskey Club also had the opportunity to purchase sample packs and vote without having to travel to Ireland.
It was a double celebration for Glendalough Distillery as it won the Irish Single Grain award for Glendalough Triple Barrel and a gold medal for Glendalough Double Barrel.
The Glendalough Double Barrel is single grain whiskey, aged first in American Bourbon barrels and finished in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks.
Since setting up in 2011, Glendalough has focused on providing a range of new and innovative Irish spirits.
Last year an Irish unit of Canadian drinks distribution group Mark Anthony Brands took a significant stake in Glendalough Distillery, injecting over €5.5 million into the company.
This year’s guest speaker at the awards was Bernard Walsh, founder and Chief Executive of Walsh Whiskey Distillery, who presented the awards across 20 categories, each of which recognised the established and emerging producers within the industry.
Commenting on the awards organiser Ally Alpine said; ‘we are delighted that the Irish Whiskey Awards have become an important date in the whiskey industry’s calendar. Unlike most international awards this is a non-profit making operation.’
